Don't tell me, tell Alan Kistler, who writes the intriguing "Agents of S.T.Y.L.E." column over at Newsarama. Capes with high, vision-obscuring collars (such as Mister Miracle's) are something he's criticized for their absurdity more than once. That column is also where I learned about the importance of balance in a costume's design and colors.

Capes, masks, hoods and helmets are probably all bad ideas from a practical standpoint. Luckily superheroes dont need to be practical. They can be as loud, garish, impossible and impractical as all get out. I hate it when superheroes get dragged down to the mudanity of the "real world". Jeans and t-shirt are noit a costume!!!! No, Batman should not be arrested for child endangerment! Yes, a pair of glasses is a more than adequate disquise!

I can see updating the look or melding different versions together but the wholesale change doesn't work more often than it does. Krypton from Superman being a notable exception.

Mr. Miracle's costume (high collar and all) has always made perfect sense to me, because he's as much a performer as he is a superhero. His costume should be flashy and ostentatious.

Exactly! I want superheroes to be big, colorful and larger than life. What is the point of making them mundane? It's like doing a western with no one on horseback or wearing a cowboy hat.

It's not like the extremes are the only possibilities. In fact, extremes are usually the worst approach to anything. The best solutions are found in the middle ground, in the balance between extremes. It's possible to be colorful and credible at the same time; it's simply a matter of finding a good balance. It's the principle of willing suspension of disbelief: making something credible enough that the audience is willing to buy into its incredible aspects.

More sophisticated meaning as I said the designers probably wanted to bring more depth and substance to Oa making it resemble an actual sprawling city which I have nor see any problem with. Why must comic book fans squabble and nitpick over the slightest little changes with stuff? Why can't we just be happy that we're getting a movie where the film makers are actually genuinely interested in making it look good? Sigh.

Wow, who the hell cares what Oa looks like in the movie? Movie Krypton didn't look like anything in the comics either, but now everything in the comics looks the movie.

You can make it more sophisticated. Making it work is more difficult. As they say in Mac programming circles, Easy is Hard.

Chris Reeve's Superman costume was pretty much right out of the comics and it worked just fine. The Superman costume from Superman Returns, not so much. Which one is more "sophisticated"?

Oa may work, it may not. It depends on the execution and how it looks on screen. We are looking at concept art after all.

For an example of not respecting your source material I have one word for you - Catwoman.

^ This is correct, Hector is nothing more than a side plot. Remember too people that Geoff Johns is an executive producer and has been overseeing the project and almost all the film is taken from his own work as the source material so rest assured that there is almost no possible way they could screw this movie up. I'm really excited and don't mind a few surface changes here and there.
