That's awesome news! I was a little concerned about The Defenders but I'm glad to see CBS is going to give them a full season to prove their stuff.

Detroit 1.8.7 - 8.29 million & 1.9/5

Jax I know you've only explained this stuff probably a thousand times, but if you'll forgive me and indulge me, could you remind us what the 1.9/5 numbers represent, and what is good, and what is bad?

TVD did well.

I really hope they keep LUX for a 3rd season. :)

The 18-49 Demographic share of the audience and its the most important to your ad buyers so networks keep an eye on it. Being a 10pm show am not surprised its that low for Detroit but you would expect a demo over 2.2 at least for ABC to keep it around after its debut season.

Its hard to say whats good or bad because apart from CBS the other networks are letting smaller demos slide in favour of high viewer totals. However anything over 3 and your very safe and anything over 2.5 is ok-ish these days if you have a decent viewer total just look at Bones (8-9 million yet normally 2.5/6 demo but FOX is never going to cancel it)

I really hope they keep LUX for a 3rd season. :)

From what I hear CW is going to cancel LUX this season (It doesn't do as well as other CW shows in the target demo of 18-34 females)

I am guessing males 18-34 are watching LUX then. 1.73 million & 0.7/2 that isn't bad considering the crap they have aired over the years and gets less than a million.

IMHO Gossip Girl, 90210 & One Tree Hill are useless. I wish they would keep LUX & Taylor Momsen join it. :)

How does one interpret the number after the number of viewers, for example 4.0/13 on The Big Bang Theory.

Yeah that's actually what I was asking, I knew they were demo numbers, but I don't know exactly how to read them.

That's a pretty low demo in proportion to the audience number - it means it's skewing too young or too old or both (probably too old). If it were attracting the "right" demo, 8M+ would be no problem. Heroes coasted along pretty well for a while doing just that, but the demo numbers were much higher.

The numbers are just labels, though. They mean nothing out of context. What really counts is avoiding the Cancellation Bear by outrunning the competition on the same network. What kills shows is when other shows on the same network are doing much better, or when the network thinks they can do better by freeing up the timeslot and trying something else. Forget all the blather about competition between networks. This is all about sibling rivalry wtihin networks. Survival numbers on CW are cancellation numbers on NBC. Survival numbers on NBC are cancellation numbers on CBS. Networks don't care what other networks are doing so much as what their own shows are doing, should be doing, and might be doing if they tried something else.

Check the Renew/Cancel index for more detailed information.

All I did in the past is look at the nationwide levels and you can pick up whats good and not over time easily. CBS is clearly a older skewing network for example because it can get double the audience of other shows in terms of viewers but a demo only 10% bigger so I know what CBS wants in their shows. Also less young people are watching LIVE TV these days so the older skewing audience is becoming more important in all 3 time slots, bad news for the other networks but CBS was ahead of the game long ago and has a huge core of older viewers,

Detroit skews old, which is expected for the 10pm slot but the demo is too much compared to the viewers it really needs to be closer to Castle's demo. ABC will give it a full season but most likely cancel it though they should not be so quick IMO because they struggle at 10pm in recent years. However an older skewing demo can be good if you pull a Boston Legal whose older audience were also very rich as in the 250,000K per year category so ABC can attract special types of ad buyers.

I think come midseason I'll make my own Renewal/Canned predictions since I go several weeks with nothing to post wiating for the new year shows to kick off/return.

The CW has picked up the “back 9″ orders for freshman Nikita and Hellcats, as well as the veteran One Tree Hill.

They will each now have 22 episode seasons.

LUX has been given no pickup so it might be about to be cancelled.

^
Which sucks because it is a great show with an awesome cast.

LUX is toast. No show that has done that bad for the CW, in total viewers, adults 18-49, or adults 18-34, or the specific genders demos has ever been picked up for another season by the CW (well by any network actually).

At best, at best you might get lucky and get a few more episodes above the original 13 episodes ordered (like Melrose Place got and Privileged the year before), but its exceptionally unlikely that it would even get to a full season before getting cancelled.

And while its gotten a bit of critical praise it hasn't been any where near enough to make up for its incredible poor performance.
