Bob Guccione dies

Founder of not only Penthouse, but also of Omni. Whatever people may say of him, I always thought he was quite the character. I'm also sorry to read about the end of his fusion project. I thought that would have been poetic had he succeeded: energy source of the future brought to us by porn money. Very Roddenberry.

Rest in Peace.

Omni magazine was great. We had a subscription when I was a kid.

I was surprised at Guccione's picture. I thought he'd be--you know--greasier. Sleazier. More than the average business executive, I mean. Funny how you form a mistaken mental picture of people.

The assumption that someone who founded Penthouse would be sleazy is a common one but obviously not correct. Whatever you think of the man or pornography, he certainly left his mark on society.

Indeed. It seems that everyone who worked for or with him, or knew him personally, liked him... Well except for Tinto Brass and Gore Vidal after Caligula.

Young Guccione had a distinctly Neil Diamond thing going on for a while there. But how much was him and how much was public persona, I guess we'll never know.

You expected him to look more like Larry Flynt? :)

We used to find hidden Penthouse, Playboy and a couple other mags of the time in a former junkyard near where I lived as a kid (8, 9 10 YO).

They had been hidden there by high schoolers, but we found 'em and got an early education.

As far as OMNI, does anybody remember at what point it stopped being about science? I had a subscription in the early 80's.

I had an image of him in a gaudy brown leisure suit with his shirt unbuttoned and too much gold jewelry. :rommie:

Didn't know that he also created Omni.

The founder of Penthouse magazine died of cancer.
Adolescent boys the world over are probably staging a moment of silence.

Former adolescent boys you mean, I doubt teens today are passing around too many porn magazines what with the amount of free porn available at their fingertips. I don't even remember the last time I saw a Playboy or a Pentouse or a Hustler on a magazine rack.

While I generally agree with your sentiment I still see Playboys, Penthouse you name it all over. Most smaller book store chains and a lot of gas stations still sell them.

Indeed. I purchased an issue of Playboy not too long ago, at a local convenience store.

Once I was done ogling Kelly Brook, I discovered that it contained an excerpt from a new translation of Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert.

So, the articles are worth reading, sometimes. Who knew?
