Did the Enterprise only have 3 female crew members?

I've always had the impression that a redshirt is a specific type of character. A character with little or no lines who's main purpose is to die.

Sounds like Tasha Yar to me. YMMV.
They dont usually have their names in the opening credits or have episodes focused on them. They also tend to be introduced and die in a single episode. :p (Leslies non withstanding)

I think B5 formally introduced the concept of the redshirt who appears in the credits and whose plot arc ends in their death.

I think that moves a character beyond the redshirt realm. Red shirts do not have arcs. They are cannon fodder.

Imagine if we had a series around "Science Officer Darnell" and the 1st season was about his life at Starfleet Academy, and the 2nd season about his first year aboard a real Starship, and the final episode of that series is called "The Man Trap"...

Or a series about a girl called Tasha Yar and her adventures as a security officer aboard a Starship, and the final episode of her series is called "Skin of Evil"...

Do you see the point I'm trying to make?

Not really.

Sure a series could be built a character that uses the name of a character who had five minutes of screen time and one line in an episode of an actual series. But those series dont exist.

Darnell was not created to be the central character of finite series that ends with his death in a episode that focuses on other characters. Tasha was created as secondary lead. The character was killed because the actress wanted to leave to to fullfill a long term character arc. Had she decided to stay, Tasha would be alive.

None of that changes what a redshirt is and what part that character plays in a story.

I'm not so sure of this. Even in season one of TNG, she was the weakest actor by far. It was absolutely painful to watch her. I still wonder to this day what Gene saw in her that made him think she was a good choice... besides the body. :p

Rocking bod vs talent.....mmmmmm WWGD?

Limited talent has never really factored into Trek actress casting choices. Even after Gene died. I think Miss Crosby would have had a solid seven year run and done the films.

I wouldn't be averse to more female 'redshirts'. Why should only actors have the fun of death by special effect?
