New TNG movie questions/ideas

I think TNG has had it's heyday. It was excellent while it was around, but it's lived it's life and continuing would just be flogging a long-dead horse.

Too much time has passed for another TNG movie now. The only realistic plausible story I can think of to tell is some kind of thing with the Romulans, following up on the Titan task force mission that Riker mentioned at the end of Nemesis. I think that if "Nemesis" wasn't such a bad movie it would have been a suitable send off.

I don't like the idea of recasting TNG. There's no point and it won't happen. The reason why TNG existed in the first place because there had been a generation between series and it made sense for Roddenberry to do a show like that. Right now it makes no sense. Abrams universe will carry the franchise until Paramount feels comfortable developing a new series.

Or to recast it again... and we will be in a temporal loop just like in "Time and Again" (TNG Season 5).

I fear that they won't leave this track anymore. They reduced Trek to Kirk, Spock and Enterprise... and they won't dare to be creative again. XI has proven them that they can make money without originality. There is nothing easier than to use known characters, or to warm up an old soup... to create something entirely new and fresh (to cook a new soup) takes much more time, effort and talent.

It worked with TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT... but I fear those times are over.

We will see a TOS reboot by the end of the 2010s... when the Abrams crew will get to old for the young audience and XI design will look outdated.

Or 10 years from now when Hollywood shifts from remaking shows from the 60s/70s to remaking shows from the 80s/90s TNG will be in the perfect position to be rebooted the same way TOS was.

I don't see a reason why a new series couldn't take place in the prime universe, a continuation of the 24th century. As for "Star Trek" being original...despite it being a reboot I found how they rebooted it quite interesting actually. The focus wasn't just Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise if you paid attention to the movie. They focused on the friendship between Bones and McCoy and I'm sure that the next movie will touch on Bones and Spock debates, there was a scene between the two of them but wasn't really time to do much else. Uhura was also made a major character thanks to her banter with Jim and her relationship with Spock.

I think the actors may be up for it.
Brent Spiner is too old to play Data (his words).

Ok. What other work though (apart from Sir Patrick Stewart) do the crew get? Frakes does some directing here and there, Sirtis does sci-fi shows and small budget shows, and I doubt Dorn, McFadden, Spiner, or Burton, are involved in many other projects. The same is true of Wheaton, perhaps. Unless most of the team are simply biding their time until retirement (Stewart is 70 or so, but most are either 60 or nearing it), then why not? if not for simply doing a project?

^ The problem is not the actors (Stewart and Spiner aside). It's that the studio no longer sees TNG as a viable financial concern, particularly when the nuTrek is so successful.

They'd have to recast all the characters, but if you're bringing new actors, why not bring in new characters, too? Data and Worf are interesting character concepts that could still work well when recast, but the others lack the strongly iconic elements that made the TOS characters worth recasting, so why not just wipe the slate clean?

^ Interesting idea ... though I think that Picard is arguably as iconic as any of the original series characters at this stage.

In my opinion a fifth TNG movie is a bridge too far. In Nemesis it ended with Riker and Troi going off to the Titan, Data had been killed and a new first officer had joined the crew.
After fifteen years it was logical that the characters would move on and not spend the next twenty years all aboard Enterprise.

Star Trek VI was an example of this. Captain Kirk, Captain Spock, Captain Scott all on the same crew with Commanders Chekov and Uhura doing lieutenant grade jobs wasn’t very plausible!
Chekov had already been Executive Officer on the Reliant before returning to tactical on Enterprise. Likewise in TNG Worf had spent four years at DS9 in command before becoming a Federation Ambassador but he always pops up in TNG movies. His presence could have been better explained!

Maybe a reunion plot somewhere down the line where Enterprise and Titan were on the same mission and the old team joined up for one more adventure.

Star Trek 2009 would have been a good story for a 5th TNG movie that deals with the time problem Commander Toby mentioned.

Hot shot cadet whose dad got killed when he was born, talked into joining the Academy by Admiral Picard, trained by several TNG characters who now teach at the Academy, meeting and a group of fresh new characters, and then he joins the Enterprise-E/F and fights against the time travelling Romulan who killed his father. Admiral Picard gets kidnapped, Vulcan gets destroyed, etc...

To be fair, it probably was more of a case that they were "Kirk's crew" or "the Enterprise's big seven." In any event, they were definitely a special case--and thus given special treatment--and likely were the only crew like that in the fleet with so many senior command-rank officers on one ship, IMO.

Depending on what the political climate in Starfleet was at the time, the Admiralty might have even preferred to keep Kirk and his command staff all in one place for as long as they could--confined to the Enterprise, they can do less damage to the Galaxy that way.

Theres only four things I'd want to see of a Next Gen movie.

1. We carry on as we always have and have another movie in the prime universe that sees the Enterprise and the Titan dealing with the aftermath of the Hobus star implosion and the new political situation with the Romulans.

Yawn.

2. TNG Mirror Universe, but this is only because I want to see evil Picard....(and would mirror Beverley and Troi be interesting for once?)

3. TNG era movie set in the Nu-universe, showing us what the 24th century is like following Nero's meddling. This could involve TNG, Ds9 and Voy characters too.

4. We go back in time a few years, and have a Dominion War movie, set on the Enterprise - want Worf? fine, he's on the defiant, lets have the two ships working together rather than just shove him back into the Enterprise crew willy-nilly, or set some of the movie at DS9, which would be logical really...just at the start, to give Worf a cameo (or more likely a reason to come aboard Enterprise) and then pack the Enterprise off into the Gamma quadrant for a mission.

Orrrr....a post-dominion war movie that still involves the dominion.

Star Trek 3 Search For Spock ending with Spock back reminds me so much of the end of Star Trek Nemesis with Data back as B4. There could have been another NG movie with a competent writer and director like what Nicholas Meyer did in WOK, Star Trek 4 Voyage Home and UC.

You mean like two of his best friends are getting married on two different planets and he want to be there for both?

Admiral Picard gets kidnapped, Vulcan gets destroyed, etc...
And then at the very end of the movie, instead of receiving a medal and a slap on the back, the hot shot cadet is made Captain of the Enterprise F.

That seemed to work for the majority of the audience in the actual movie, so there's no reason why it wouldn't have worked in that imaginary movie.
