George Takei and Katee Sackhoff on TBBT

Sulu and Starbuck were on TBBT tonight, playing Wolowitiz's "shoulder angels."

I thought the episode was damn funny, the best part being Katee asking George how he would know what a woman wants, and he replies "I read books." That was just too funny.

So what'd you guys think?

Most people that I've talked to have had just the opposite reaction to this season thus far. Until last night's episode, they've focused too much on Sheldon, trying to push the envelope with how ridiculous than can make his character, and it just hasn't worked.

Last night's episode was back to being more of an ensemble effort and it worked a LOT better. Strongest episode of the new season by far.

I really liked the first three seasons, but am not digging this one so far. It seems like the show becoming a hit has made the writers lazy. It's not the same since it moved from Mondays. I enjoyed this cameo, though. It made me happy to see Katee in the uniform again and I also really liked George's line about how he reads. Definitely the highlight of a so far lackluster season.

Ditto here. This one was thoroughly enjoyable and the return of Katie Sackhoff and appearance of George Takei was frosting on the already good cake.

I also liked that they picked up a few admittedly minor dangling plots, namely what happened between Howard and Bernadette and Rajesh working with (FOR) Sheldon. The writers have a bad habit of dropping characters abruptly and without explanation (e.g., Bernadette, Dr. Stephanie, Leslie Winkel), so it was good to see Bernadette return...and with the actress's name added to the opening credits, no less. Hopefully she lasts a bit longer than Sara Gilbert who was also added to the opening credits for a short stint and then completely vanished.

Yeah, it was the best episode in a while. I also really enjoyed Sheldon's and Raj's fight.

Yeah, they've been trying to basically turn Sheldon into the "Urkel" of the show. Which makes sense since he's the funniest character on the show (not counting Leonard as straight man, one's a perv and the other is silent). But yeah, yesterday was a bit of a return to form.

Agreed. This season has started weird.

Last season virtually every episode was great.

And Leonard and Penny dating WAS a good idea, as was the break up. It gets the Will They/Won't They out of the way.

I thought the one where Sheldon sends out his robot to live his life was hilarious. When Leonard shuts it off while driving, then it turns itself back on BAZINGA! and he almost gets into an accident

For me, part of it is that, starting as far back as Season 2, the humor on the show has gradually gotten less smart. In Season 1, there were some very clever jokes about string theory and spherical cows....jokes that would have fit in well in XKCD or PhD Comics. Gradually, the humor has gotten more mainstream. Last season, you had this funny scene lampooning theoretical physics:

but that kind of thing was already getting rare at that point, and it's more rare now.

The show is still *about* geeks, but it's not quite as geeky as it used to be. It's still funny. I still laugh at every episode. But it relies more on mainstream humor now than it used to.

Well my opinion on the show is that when it premiered it was a show about geeks where at times they could be the punch-line, but also for 'geeks' watching the show they could laugh at things knowing the 'joke' was going over the head of people tuning in just to poke fun at geeks.

I think as the show has gone along and attracted more viewers it's become much more of a lampooning of geeks in general and rather than be a part of the joke or make jokes they themselves are the joke 90% of the time.
