Here's their press release:

New York, October 7, 2010 – Beginning January 2011, DC Comics will implement a line-wide pricing adjustment, lowering the prices of all standard length 32-page ongoing comic book titles currently priced at $3.99 to $2.99, it was announced today by DC Comics Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio.

“Today’s announcement re-affirms DC Comics’ commitment to both our core fans and to comic book store retailers,” said Jim Lee, DC Comics Co-Publisher. “For the long term health of the industry, we are willing to take a financial risk so that readers who love our medium do not abandon the art form.”

“As Co-Publishers, we listened to our fans and to our partners in the retail community who told us that a $3.99 price point for 32 pages was too expensive. Fans were becoming increasingly reluctant to sample new titles and long term fans were beginning to abandon titles and characters that they’d collected for years.” said Dan DiDio, DC Comics Co-Publisher. “We needed a progressive pricing strategy that supports our existing business model and, more importantly, allows this creative industry to thrive for years to come. With the exceptions of oversized comic books, like annuals and specials, we are committed to a $2.99 price point.”

When taking into account mini-series, annuals and specials, more than 80% of DC’s comic books will be priced at $2.99.

As of January, the following titles standard length ongoing titles, previously priced at $3.99 for 32 pages/22 story pages, will be priced at $2.99 with 32 pages/20 story pages:

American Vampire;
Batman: The Dark Knight;
Batman Incorporated;
Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors;
JSA All-Stars.

As of January, the following licensed titles, previously priced at $3.99, will be priced at $2.99:

Gears of War;
God of War
Kane & Lynch;
Ratchet & Clank.

As of January, the following ongoing titles previously priced at $3.99 for 40 pages/30 story pages including co-features, will no longer include co-features and will be priced at $2.99 for 32 pages/ 20 story pages:

Action Comics;
Adventure Comics;
Batman: Streets of Gotham;
Detective Comics;
Doc Savage;
Justice League of America;
Legion of Super-Heroes;
The Spirit.

In January, five books are $3.99 for 40 pages/30 story pages:

Batman: Europa # 1
First Wave # 6
DCU: Legacies # 9
Weird Worlds # 1
World of Warcraft: Curse of the Worgen

The following oversized anniversary issue will be $4.99 for 48 pages/38 story pages:

Hellblazer # 275

“Fans of our co-features should stay tuned. Some of these characters will find a new platform,” said Dan DiDio. “Going forward, mini-series and special events may feature a different price point and page count to best allow writers and artists the flexibility of format and story pages they need to tell their stories best.”

Good for them! $4 for a comic book is utterly ridiculous.

Re: DC Comics announces $2.99 price point for all 32-page comics in 20

Sure, they dropped the price down, but they also cut two story pages out of some standard length issues. Not much of a deal there.

Re: DC Comics announces $2.99 price point for all 32-page comics in 20

Marvel should look out and pay attention. It was a pricing move similar to this on Marvel's part back in the '70's that allowed them to take over from DC as the biggest seller in the industry.

ETA: Ha! I told ya so! :cool:

Re: DC Comics announces $2.99 price point for all 32-page comics in 20

Marvel's only saying that their new titles next year won't be at $3.99. The ones that are already there, well...Marvel isn't willing to go quite that far like DC plans to do...

Re: DC Comics announces $2.99 price point for all 32-page comics in 20

And since none of the other old codgers here has yet said it ...

Ahem ...,

I can remember back when comics were 10 cents, and the increase to 12, 15, 20 and 25 cents during the '70s. And the gasp-inspiring jump to 35 cents that put some people over the edge. :p

Yes, I'm old.

Do you remember when kids could buy a piece of candy for 1 cent too?;)

The two pages missing is unfortunate but staying at $2.99 is important. I think the trade off is worth it.

I thought the jump from 35 to 50 cents was more gasp-inspiring.
and A WHOLE BUCK for an Annual? Sheesh!

Re: DC Comics announces $2.99 price point for all 32-page comics in 20

Seriously, $4 for a pamphlet is ridiculous; $3 isn't good, but at least DC's trying.

Twenty minutes of fresh entertainment (tops) is a rather poor deal compared to just about any other method of entertainment I can think of.

Re: DC Comics announces $2.99 price point for all 32-page comics in 20

I'm 31 and I think comics were $1.50 or something like that. I think that is a reasonable price. Three dollars is better, but they still need to go down a little more for me to buy them on a regular basis. I also want the ongoing saga's to stop I can't read one comic because I have to know the whole story up until that point for it to make sense.

Re: DC Comics announces $2.99 price point for all 32-page comics in 20

Comics were $1.25 when I started around 1991 or so.

Bugger that, I used to go into the store and get a little brown paper bag and fill it with assorted pieces and the owner would charge me a penny per five pieces.

From 10 cents to 12 to 15 etc I could always afford a fistfull of comics on my allowance each week and I knew the exact hour every Thursday that the truck delivered the new stacks.

What Risk?!?

Selling comics at a reasonable price to the broadest spectrum of people for generations to come instead of jacking it up like there's no tomorrow?

They're taking a short- to medium-term financial risk for what they hope will be in their long-term interests, as well as the long-term interests of the medium as a whole. Attempting to reach a wider readership through a lower price point is a risk well worth taking, but it's a risk nevertheless since the move isn't guaranteed to work.

Re: DC Comics announces $2.99 price point for all 32-page comics in 20

Yeah, in fairness, even a four-dollar comic is only going to generate a gross of about $120k or so on average.*

I have no idea what kind of expenses and margins are involved, but--in any event--that's not a tremendous amount of money to divvy up between the eight or nine contractors and salaried employees who make the comic, the company that owns and publishes it, the delivery company that gets it to stores, and the retailer who ultimately rings it up for the reader.

*Not counting the long tail.

^ Don't they still sell ads for Sea Monkeys and Daisy Air Rifles? Bendix brakes? X-ray specs?

I think this is a good measure. I used to be able to get two comics a week and candy and still have some of my dollar left over. My mother would pay me this dollar when I was six-eight for walking the five minutes to the store every day to get the paper and milk and such. I remember it started off as seventy five cents and negotiating with my mother when comics made the jump over 25 cents.

So, would a six or seven year old today, doing about the same thing, reasonably expect to get about ten dollars a week allowance???
