Tennant Gives Props to Smith

David Tennant on leaving Doctor Who

There's an interesting interview in the latest issue of the Radio Times in which David Tennant looks back on leaving Doctor Who, and insists that he has no regrets about doing so.

In the piece, Tennant says, "It felt right to pass the baton on and for it to continue to thrive." Specifically chatting about the transmission of The End Of Time Part II at the start of the year, he added, "I was at home in London on New Year's Day when I watched my last episode. It felt emotional, a weird mixture of emotions, but above all I was proud to be going out with a bang."

While conceding that there's a downside to leaving such a role behind, Tennant did say that "It created many, many more opportunities than it closed down. My life and career are in a very different place to where they were before Doctor Who and that is 90 percent positive."

And what's more, he's a fan of his successor, Matt Smith, too. "I've loved every second. It's a thrill to be watching as a viewer again. I knew Matt was going to be fantastic and he is. He's a great choice and he's knocked it out of the park," Tennant said.

The actor can currently be seen in the BBC drama Single Father, and you can read the full interview in this week's Radio Times. It's well worth picking up.

That's a very classy thing for him to say about Smith. I'm sure there's no way NOT to compare how he would take on the scripts that Smith now has.. "I'd have done it this way." sort of thing, but that's completely natural.

Smith had a big Tardis to fill when Tennant left and I think he's done a great job making the roll his own.

It's very rare that you hear an actor talk about the person who has replaced him in a franchise. I think Connery admitted to only ever watching about 1/2 a Roger Moore Bond movie (and none of his own, to be fair), I haven't heard Chris Eccleston talk about Tennant's Dr Who. I do remember Pierce Brosnan singing Daniel Craig's praises though.

This interview confirms two things though - that Tennant is a class act and that Smith is a brilliant Doctor!

Tennant is a gracious man, that's for sure.

He underestimates himself if he thinks that what Smith's managing is nearly as good as what he did as Ten.

Sez you. I'd say Smith's curious eccentric is many times better than a prancing, gurning tit who couldn't go 10 seconds without telling some fucking idiot that they're the most special person in all of creation and pulling out the crying towel.

Nah, Tennant sees exactly how good Smith is and he's letting us all know. ;)

I love Tennant and am not going to join those who slag him off. But since Smith took over, I haven't missed DT at all and with every episode, I become more and more convinced that Matt is the best Doctor ever.

I'm about 90% where Captaindemotion is. I liked Tennant, but something about Smith really strikes me as special, in a way no Doctor since Tom Baker has. And I will not pull out the crying towel when I say that.

And I love how even something as polite as a guy saying another guy's doing a good job can become so contentious on here.

Put me down as another who feels this way. There is something about Smith that is remarkable and uncommon. I don't think he will ever eclipse Tom Baker in my mind, but he is easily the best of the new series doctors imo, and better than quite a few of the classic ones too..

Eccleston also thinks Matt Smith was a great choice for Doctor Who. Article here:

Now that's interesting. I didn't think Eccleston watched Doctor Who at all.

Tennant is a fan of the show (just like RTD is). They both seem to have similar comments. They enjoy just being able to be fans and the product is good, so it rewards them for this. BTW, Smith is amazing, but so was Tennant and so was Eccleston. When each of them left, I thought it would be hard for the next Doctor to replace them.

I think Tennant and Smith are both amazing...

... but I still think that Eccleston was transcendent.

Actually doesn't the article say that Eccleston liked Smith's theatre work? I don't think it implies he watches the show.

Well to be fair, I seriously doubt either actor would come out ond say "I think hes horrible." in a print interview, even if they didn't care for him.

While I like watching Smith, he hasn't quite clicked with me on an emotional level yet like Eccelston and Tennant. Eh, its probably just a matter of needing another series under his belt, and a bit more drama.

^This is true, but they could be damning with their silence. Tennant seems very enthusiastic about Smith in the role, more than if he were just being polite.

The current trend in interviews tends to be complete candor. Witness Eccleston finally coming clean on why he left Doctor Who, for example. And pretty much every interview that shows up in DWM nowadays (if you think DWM exists only as a "puff piece" vehicle for the Doctor Who Production Office, read their recent Matthew Waterhouse and Sylvester McCoy interviews. Eye-opening stuff).

Tennant is a fan, and yes out of loyalty I don't expect him to come out and say "Matt Smith is awful". But if he wasn't completely pleased I think he'd have couched his criticism in some way and I don't see it here. Before he left, Tennant said he intended to keep watching as a fan, so his comments in Radio Times are completely consistent with that.
