Complete text of Piller's unpublished "Writing of Insurrection" online

I'm halfway through and it's got some amazing insights.

A great study on how that film came to be what it was... and a peek inside the mind of a professional TV screenwriter in a unique situation. Especially interesting are Patrick Stewart's notes on early story drafts.

My two-cents takeaway is that this one was a prime example of "too many cooks" all of whom had been in the same kitchen for far too long at that point...

There's a thread in TrekLit on it. I've downloaded it but haven't had time yet to start reading it.

Sweet! I've been waiting (literally) years to read this!

Re: Complete text of Piller's unpublished "Writing of Insurrection" on

This is great fun, thanks!

Re: Complete text of Piller's unpublished "Writing of Insurrection" on

I've commented on the thread in TrekLit, but I thought I'd quickly say again: This is really great and any serious Trekkie would be mad not to read it.

Really interesting read.

I loved the original concept of Picard tracking down his former friend who has 'gone rogue' inside the Neutral Zone.

Re: Complete text of Piller's unpublished "Writing of Insurrection" on

I'm shocked and amazed by the level of detail they all paid to canon. We're always critical of the producers for "not caring" but... they all truly seem to. The actors as well. And shocking of most; the studio big-wigs.

The link now says that the manuscript has been removed at the request of Micheal Piller's family. It sounds interesting, however, so I may keep an eye open for it when it gets published.

It's not getting published, so far as I know. But certain people may have downloaded it and be able to send it to people who want it. People who have bones. Not naming any names. If you want it, PMing someone you think may have it would be a good move. Someone who has bones perhaps.

Or psis. Whatever the heck those are.

It's on the Internet now. It's never going to go away.

I'm looking forward to getting the chance to read it:devil:......er.....I mean, darn, I'm sorry I missed it.

Re: Complete text of Piller's unpublished "Writing of Insurrection" on

I should have grabbed it when I had the chance. I'd love to have a copy of that, as a tribute to Michael Piller's great writing.

It's nice to know I can still get a copy from some of you guys, but if it was not intended to be published, why was it written? Was it a private memo or something?

It was intended to be published, then Paramount nixed it for whatever reason (probably fear that it would make them look bad, but it doesn't do that). Not sure why Piller's family wanted it taken down, maybe they were afraid Paramount would sue them or something.

Re: Complete text of Piller's unpublished "Writing of Insurrection" on

I think it's interesting that a lot of the criticisms that came from the studio were apparently disregarded since they clearly didn't fix what were perceived as problems. They were, in fact, the very same problems I had with the final script.

I also thought it was really telling that Rick Berman was going, "Oh, we can't go there. Patrick will hate it if we do that." Later we learned Patrick would've loved to have gone in that direction. Berman didn't even know his cast well enough to make that call, and in my opinion, shouldn't have been so presumptuous.

Re: Complete text of Piller's unpublished "Writing of Insurrection" on

I think you're forgetting that it's often a fine line a producer has to walk when dealing with their actors -- especially their leads, and especially someone in Stewart's position at the time. Berman was probably more worried about Stewart rocking the boat more than anything, no matter what they put to paper.
