Phoenix was in character

The moment I heard about that bizarre Letterman appearance I knew it was for a Borat type film.

Letterman has had a few of these instances: Kaufman, Glover, and Phoenix at least. I'm not quite sure that he isn't in on these.

I'm sure he was in on the Kaufman & Phoenix stuff. In the case of Crispin Glover, he actually is crazy and routinely treats people like shit. (I've heard horror stories from independent theater owners where he's made personal appearances.) In Glover's case, even if Dave knew that some crazy shit was about to go down, I get the sense that he didn't know that Glover was going to nearly kick him in the head. He seemed genuinely shocked & disturbed when that happened, both at the time and then afterwards.

Did anyone watch the movie? I'm surprised at how divisive it's become.

I saw it. I can't say I liked it, but I do think it's interesting. If the purpose of a piece of art is to make us feel something, then I think it succeeds at being art. It's a challenging work that strikes an odd unbalance between humor & sadness. If you want to see a movie that's beyond the normal scope of what most movies are, I would recommend it. If you're looking for something more conventional that you can "enjoy" on the level of Borat or Bruno, look elsewhere. (My father's succinct review was, "Self indulgent crap!")

I read this story the other day. How is this news? I thought this has been known for aaages now, that his crazy stuff was all just show for some film. I heard that months ago.

This just in- Man lands on the moon!
We've known for a while that Casey Affleck was making a movie about this and lots of people suspected that it was all fake but until now they had been treating it like it was real.

I like the way the movie integrates that into the story. Throughout, Phoenix laments that no one is taking his hip hop career seriously and that they all think that it's a joke. "This is my life, man. Stop treating my life like it's a fucking joke."

Glover may be crazy but he was also in character for some movie. Dave used to get really defensive around his neck, I think he had some trauma, so you might be right about that.
