"$#*! My Dad Says"

Hmm,

Well I enjoyed this one quite a bit, but based on the majority of responses here, it would appear that I'd better not get attached to it. :(

I don't know folks, but sometimes I think people get so wrapped up in expecting great TV IN EVERY SINGLE SHOW, that sometimes they just can't appreciate just sitting back and having a little fun for 30 minutes.

Oh well, to each his own. I'll enjoy it while I can.

Why shouldn't we expect great TV? Or even GOOD TV?

This was neither. It felt OLD. It wasn't particularly funny. Don't know if it got better, I only lasted 5 minutes.

I prefer my comedies with laughs.

Edited to add: it will probably be around for awhile 12 million other people agree with you. Probably the same that kept watching Everybody Loves Raymond.

if you didn't enjoy it, that's certainly your right and I wouldn't presume to tell you what to like or not. If I came off that way, I apologize.

For me, I guess I'm just glad I can have realistic expectations and can relax and can have a little fun with something. Not everything I watch has to be Emmy worth. Entertain me for 30 minutes, that's all I ask and this show did that for me.

That being said, 12 million viewers or not, it probably won't last. The concept isn't sustainable.

I missed the first episode, but I saw a taping of the second one about a month ago, and I thought it was pretty funny. Far and away, Shat is the best thing about the show, but if you like to see Shat being... well, Shat, then I think it's a fun way to spend thirty minutes. Kind of weird and kind of perfect pairing with Big Bang Theory at the same time.

I was a little upset that you presume people who don't like something it's because it's not "emmy" worthy.

People WANT to be entertained. Just like you. You liked it, many people didn't. They aren't snobs because they didn't like Shit My Dad Says.

It doesn't matter if the concept is sustainable. if it stays about 8 million people it will continue.

Your the second person here, I think 005 was the other, that mentioned they attended a taping of the show. Was laughter encouraged? Were you prompted to laugh? Either way the large complaint, which rings hollow to me anyway, is that the show is just 'canned laughter'. As if no comedy show the last 30yrs, even successful ones, has used laugh tracks.

I'd go a tad lower, I think it can drop to around 7 million and make it. I mean hell the NBC comedies are only bringing in about 6-8 so that seems to be the competitive range to at least stay equal to.The Big Bang Theory survived with around that much and now its debuting with 14 million and kicking ass of all other comedies.

Depending on what TBBT does, My Dad should be safe as a partner if it stays in double digits but make no doubts that CBS wants to reflect the monday 9-10 slot. However I could see a longer run solution should any problems arise and make TBBT/Two & Half Men the thursday shows putting Shat and co on mondays.

CBS seem happy to have there comedies hit the 8 million at the worse as long as the 18-49 demo is in the mid 3 range (3.5). However they also want a good audience retention as well ;)

I dunno, I laughed even if the jokes were mostly lame. So I'll stick around for a while or until it gets really bad. But dear god, every time I look at the Shatman I realize how huge he's gotten. It can't be healthy.

Anyway, he's the best thing about the show. If the son is a second pick, I'd have liked to have seen the first one. Who was it? Does anyone know?

So this show isn't laugh-tracked? It sure sounded like canned laughs to me.

Considering the man is 80 years old, I think he's doing good. ;)

Indeed. He does not look his age. My wife didn't believe me when I told her he was pushing 80. I had to pull up IMDB to prove it to her. Even then she was still in disbelief.

Fair enough and you have my apologies. I saw, what perceived at a lot of "piling on" trashing the show, and reacted to that. I should not have. You liked it or you didn't, and everybody has the right to like or dislike it. I hope it keeps the ratings and stays around, but wouldn't expect anybody to watch if they truly disliked it.

Maybe I should have said I'm glad I have "lower expectations."

I don't know, I'm reminded of that CBS sitcom from a couple of seasons ago entitled Worst Week. I know that show regularily had over 8 million viewers but CBS didn't stick with it. Of course maybe the difference was in the demos, I don't remember those.

I just remember not understanding CBS's line of reasoning because at the time they were keeping Old Christine with worse numbers.

I wouldn't call it "lower expectations" If it entertained you then that's good. If someone didn't like it then that's fine too. No need to paint yourself in such a way.

Your the second person here, I think 005 was the other, that mentioned they attended a taping of the show. Was laughter encouraged? Were you prompted to laugh?

Only in the most general sense--i.e., before the show began, the warm up guy instructed us to laugh if we thought something was funny. It wasn't a "laugh no matter what" thing; in fact, if a joke didn't get a good response from the audience, the writers would come out onto the set, huddle up with the actors and change the joke. There was at least one I can think of that was particularly unfunny that they did that with.

Either way the large complaint, which rings hollow to me anyway, is that the show is just 'canned laughter'. As if no comedy show the last 30yrs, even successful ones, has used laugh tracks.

Yeah, laugh tracks, while odd and probably out-dated, are just part of the reality of multi-cam sitcoms. I wonder if it's even possible for them to edit out audience laughter anyway, since most of the sitcoms with laugh tracks are actually taped in front of an audience.

CBS is the number one network right now, I think... they don't have to be as patient with their shows as some others might be. It'll be interesting to see what numbers the show does in its second week.

From the OP there is a 2min clip showing the first son.
You'll see a few jokes redone for the pilot. What I noticed rewatching it is that the girl-friend is not around? IMDB list the actress as Zibby Allen. Or maybe she doesn't show till another episode. She and the first 'lead son' are still listed on the credits page as of now in "unknown episodes". If you pause that video at exactly the 1min mark you'll notice the cast photo has Zibby included. The joke about 'mowing the grass at an abandoned house' was good though.

My girl-friend who I watched it with didn't believe me either. She commented, "If he lost that gut he'd pass for 60 easy."

On another board, SHH, someone else said the same thing just couldn't recall the show. They said 3 shows were cancelled by CBS with ratings in the 8 million.

I liked $#*! My Dad Says and hope it makes it.

Oh I dunno. I'm sure he's in good health. He rides horses after all. I just worry about all that extra weight. It's prolly fine though. It must be in his dna.. he always fought that tire around the middle of the TOS seasons after all.

Oh, and I dunno about him looking younger if he lost the weight. After a certain age, weight loss can = extra wrinkles. Right now, he looks darned good for 80.

Oh, and Geck -- thanks for the link to the previous actor playing the son. Checked it out... hmm... dunno... I think they did the right thing by changing. I've gotta say that the new one actually looks a lot like the Shat. Anyone know why the change?

If the show's ratings don't fall through the floor in subsequent episodes, I suspect CBS will give it a chance since they need pieces for a comedy block.

Two and a Half Men's long in the tooth (and who knows if Charlie Sheen can stay out of trouble) and even How I Met Your Mother is showing its age (last season completely fell off the rails from a writing standpoint, from what little I saw of it).

Parts I liked. Parts I was like ... meh. But I felt the same way about the first episode of TBBT and I love that show now. I'll tune in for a while. Sometimes sitcoms take a bit to get off their feet. I don't want to be a FOX exec and swear off something that isn't an instant hit.
