Kindle Questions

It's definitely a nice device to have if you're any kind of a reader.

It's especially good if you're a fan of book series (for instance, A Song of Ice and Fire, where each book is on the order of 700+ pages. With all four current books on the Kindle at once, I can flip back-and-forth to remember quotes, passages, characters, etc., VERY handy for traveling and/or on airplanes.

Cheers,

I don't have the money at the moment, so it is a moot point, but I am constantly watching for internet articles on the latest eBook readers, hoping that by the holiday season something will happen to make it affordable for whoever is buying my presents.

I buy almost all of my books from Goodwill or other thrift stores - I sometimes go through two books a week. I'm not sure if a Kindle would be cost-effective for me.

I've been wondering if there's any electronic equivalent to the public library for these devices? (Not sure if that sounds like a stupid question or not.....)

My public library offers e-books for loan through the library2go web-site

This is the Saskatchewan version

Loans are free and you have the book for, I think, three weeks then the DRM will kick in and either delete it or make it unreadable (I'm not sure because I haven't used the service yet).

I've scrolled through their list of compatible portable devices and I think it can be summed up as "Everything but the Kindle".

I have a Sony PRS 900 eReader and I love it! :D I got the Sony instead of any of the others precisely because of the file format and DRM issues. And if you have the Calibre program installed on your PC, you can convert PDFs to EPUB; I've done that for several PDF documents.

On that subject, the book publishers handle this sort of thing in a completely inane fashion. If you click on one of the books there, you can see how there are a limited amount of "copies" available. Despite the rise of sales of eBooks, the publishers still don't really understand how to deal with digital media so they try to put artificial limits on them... and all that's doing is holding back adoption and progress.

It would be like saying only 5 people can tune into a radio station or only 2 people can watch a movie on Netflix at the same time. Manufactured scarcity in a digital world makes absolutely no sense.

So what about document types like the basic old .doc, .rtf, .txt and such? Are they supported at all?

If you email those to your Kindle address, though, and they convert it for you. You could use Calibre to do that, but emailing's probably easier.

Calibre gives you more control though, and it's not really that hard to use.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a Kindle again (I have a Kindle DXi).
Since I've bought a Nook in August I haven't touched the Kindle.

So, which ebook reader is the best if you just have a bunch of PDFs and plain text (.txt) files you want to read on the go? I'm not particularly interested in buying DRMed ebooks from Amazon or whoever.

To each his own. I think their licensing terms are pretty reasonable, and if push comes to shove, the DRM can be stripped away pretty easily.

I've had some success converting PDFs to other formats with Calibre.

For those who haven't used it, it does conversions for a pretty good range of eReaders, not just the Kindle. It's pretty useful.
