Practical, But Geeky

I was of course inspired by Starbreakers Geeky, But Practical thread right here in this very forum.

I was watching some ENT yesterday and again found the Trek use of the VHS-cassette shelves from IKEA ingenious (they are used to hold mugs right next to the drinks dispenser), I first noticed this because I originally wanted the very same IKEA item to store my excessive tape collection in.

I never got those but I do have the Arne Jacobsen utensils some of which are also used on ENT:

And when I needed some glasses for hot stuff I happened to find (but I didn't know it at the time) the very same kind Odo is demonstrating in The Way of the Warrior:

The point of this thread, as you might gather, is to show 'n' tell about stuff you have that actually is just ordinary stuff anyone might have, but that has a special meaning to your geeky self.

If you have the same CD-holders Archer has, the orange peeler hanging (upside down) in Pulaski's Sick-bay, Janeway's mug or any other thing you've seen in geeky entertainment (doesn't have to be Trek!) then this is the thread to come clean in!

It's in a box somewhere in my parent's basement but I have a audio-cassette tape holder/case from when I was a kid (the 80s rule and tapes sound better than you kids' "iPod" nonsense!) Much to my surprise when I watch TNG that very same model/type of cassette holder turns up from time to time as a portable medical kit. I'll see if I can find it and a screen-cap from TNG of both over the weekend.

^Reminds me: We used to have a transistor radio* in the kitchen that looked very much like one that was on BSG -I could see it wasn't the same make but the resemblance was a bit eerie.

Much to my surprise when I watch TNG that very same model/type of cassette holder turns up from time to time as a portable medical kit.

Ah! so that's what all those little special kit cases are

Probably not the one you're thinking of (the large funky-shaped one with the holder for the tricorder.) The one I have is much smaller and, well, looks like a cassette case. Poked around on Trekcore to see if I could find a screen-cap of it and I couldn't, and I've no idea what episode/scene it was in but I've a clear picture in my head of it. It may have even been an engineering prop. Shoot. I can't even find a picture of the holder itself, we are talking about a cassette case I bought over 20 years ago.

Yep, the thing on the right is it! Somewhere in the series there's a reall good shot of it, may also have been in Voy.

Looks like the tray was made with a bunch of first-generation Palm Pilots. Pretty expensive prop.

And someone should tell Bashir it's not nice to eat directly from the Taco-Toppings self-serve bar.

Not to mention the 'newspad' -that prototype must've cost a fortune back then -I mean; look at the size of that screen
