Bad Guy in the New Film??

I'm fine with no villian(s) in the next movie. In a two-hour movie, they could visit two or three planets (perhaps searching for a planet suitable to become "New Vulcan") and have a couple of things happen in space, too - other ships, friendly or otherwise.

But if we need a villian, I suggest The Gorn.

No, I'm serious. Think about what we know of them:

Territorial
Fast ships
Powerful weaponry
Physically strong
Very intelligent

The only fault of The Gorn in "Arena" was its appearance. That can be greatly improved with today's movie technology. Let's have a whole ship full of them duke it out with The Enterprise - both on a planet, sort of like the Rigel fight we never got to see in The Cage - and later in space with the usual phasers and photon torpedoes and such.

Someday, they'll have to return to the Rommies and finally give them the right kind of development, that they've never had. But for the next flick, something new and unexpected would be fun!

Which makes me wonder why he doesn't just destroy the suns that correspond to the planets. After all, that red matter was able to consume a galaxy threatening super nova from the inside, why should a big flaming ball of gas be any different? Even in Star Trek IV, Admiral Cartwright says "Even with planetary reserves, we cannot survive without the sun." And that was a "Earth needs to be saved" storyline. Another benefit to destroying the sun? NO DRILLING.

That gives the inhabitants a chance of escape. He wants to go for the kill.

I'm not entirely convinced. Drilling as depicted in the movie takes time while just shooting a lava lamp with a drop of red matter into something destructive does not. Nero can warp by the sun, shoot the red matter, warp to Earth and pick off any cruiser attempting to escape. At least that way he can pursue the ships rather than staying in one spot just to drill. His missiles aren't the fastest things in the universe.

And why would it matter if they did flee? All they would have are their ships. Their base of operations has ALWAYS been depicted as "If Earth is destroyed, everything is gone", so what does a few ships who cannot resupply or re-group gonna do? Nero can always go after them.

I'm not sure I'd give the character on AICN quite so much credit.

He announced at Comic-Con that it really is him. Although, he is "in character" given the nature of the venue he is posting in.
Okay, I guess that works.

Always funny to see what happens when Orci shows up in these talkbacks. Half of the fanboys are kissing his ass, the other half of the fanboys are insulting him, and the minor part of valid criticism to the script is bounced off by Orci with comments like "this proves to me why you do what you do and why we do what we do."

I haven't really paid much attention to the talkbacks at AICN, but I've seen him more than a few times in the Comments for articles at TrekMovie. Sometimes it's pretty much the way you described it, but I've seen some decent exchanges happen when he's approached more in the middle ground between effusiveness and antagonism, and on a subject he's ready to talk about. He's also made some amusing deflections when pressed on topics he pretty clearly isn't interested in discussing in depth and there have been times I've had the distinct impression that he's toying with some people.
