I've found the dumbest "fact" ever mentioned on memory alpha

The page for the planet "Betazed" feels its necessary to tell us "The University of Betazed is located on Betazed".
I love the site but sometimes there is so much unnecessary nonsense on there.

It's still useful information, because the University of Betazed could have been an off-world facility. Sort of like how Earth Station McKinley actually isn't located on Earth, but rather in Earth orbit.

I'm more bothered by the fact that there is a "University of Betazed" in Star Trek - something, I admit, I missed while watching the shows. That's like having a "University of Earth"! Reminds me of Kang and Kodos in an episode of The Simpsons, hitchhiking with a sign that says "EARTH CAPITAL".

In a very real way, it's no different than "the Vulcan Science Academy" or even "the University of Texas" when you think about it. It's just a name given to a recognized localized institution, and in the Federation era, that could mean a planet as well as a city or state, IMO.

A science academy for the whole planet, or a university for an entire state, is easier to swallow than a university for the whole planet. How many students are there at the "University of Betazed"? How large is it? Or is it a name for an institution that consists of a huge number of different universities all over the planet, which would make a lot more sense?

This reminds me of something from my friend's workplace. She's employed with a company that, basically, produces all the complex mathematical equations in college-level textbooks and the like. There's a woman there whose entire job is to enforce proper English and go over various secondary computer programs with people. Unfortunately, she has very, very little grasp on the English language, so she's confined to the latter. She wrote an email to everyone in the building recently which read as follows:

Hello all,

Hell all.

There's a new program on the English words in the English section on the English board. Please read the English program when you can so you can know the English words better.

Thanks,
Bye all.

Well, there is "The American University" in Beirut.

I would think it's simply an arbitrary name chosen for a particular institution at Betazed. It need not be anything more than that.

It is probably something that could have been worded a little more effectively by that poster. Instead of how it reads currently, it could be replaced with a more classically worded "This world, a member of the Federation since 2XXX, is also the home of the renowned University of Betazed, specializing in the training and enrichment of psionically talented species from the Alpha and Beta Quadrants". You could throw in some extra historical info (or whatever stuff has been out there to add to the quality of the post) and nobody would have ever noticed how stupid it sounds. It's all in the perception and construction of the syntax.

What irks me about MA is the apparent policy to write almost all articles in the past tense. That makes sense if you're referring to the events in an episode or Trek's "history" but makes no sense in other cases. Does it really need to say "[insert physical phenemon] was .... "

Most of the info not related to events or history in Trek should *not* be written in the past tense, as though they no longer exist.

I'd like to thank the Academy, my agent, my producer, and all the little people upon whom I have trodden in my long climb to success... ;)
