September 11th, 2001--Memorial Thread

You did, however, yell. At least, that's how all-caps is often interpreted.

Sorry if I overreacted, but your post seemed, to me, somewhat overbearing under the circumstances.

At first I thought you'd omitted any use of "please" or "thank you" as well, though I noticed the please before I made my first post. Still, IMO you could have phrased your request a little more politely.

But again, sorry if I overreacted.

Not that anyone here gives a flying fuck about what I think, but I only brought it up in the first place because other people were raising concerns about why people who aren't New Yorkers would care about what happened on 9/11 in the first place. I mentioned Boston because of the long simmering rivalry between the two cities. (NOT just the ball teams. The cities THEMSELVES.)

I figured that if anyone in Boston could find it in their hearts to 1) give a crap about what happened to a rival city, and 2) actually show IN PUBLIC how much they could care about a supposed enemy, then it must be worth mentioning.

As for the Mets/Braves game, I mentioned *that* because I thought this game was a very important part of the healing process that was ongoing in New York City.

You've got to be kidding.

For those who have criticized me for saying that 9/11 was the darkest day in human history, let me clarify. There are plenty of events that could qualify for the darkest periods in human history, but they happened over a period of time, the Holocaust, the Eastern European genocides, and so on.

Though I was born in 1982, I lost most of what would have been my family during the Holocaust and my grandmother still has nightmares about being separated from her parents as they were sent to the gas chambers. The world was already at war during the Holocaust and the world didn't change once the war was over the way it did after 9/11.

I nearly lost my cousin in the 9/11 attack, she was working as a secretary in the WTC and was late that day. I nearly lost my MOTHER during the London attacks, she should have been on the BUS that was blown up, but for some reason was running earlier than usual and was walking the last bit to work when it happen.

IMHO, 9/11 is the darkest day in history because it shows that we haven't learned from our mistakes of the last century. We had two world wars which killed millions and genocides which killed millions more and I wouldn't be surprised if historians look back to 9/11 and say this started World War III.

We're still killing each other for the dumbest reasons, we still have to deal with bigots, and we're fighting some wars that we shouldn't be fighting. The only way for us to heal is to practice not only tolerance of difference, but acceptance of difference.

Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination.

I am a Briton, I now live in the US, am married to a US citizen and I am in the process of changing my nationality. I will be an American citizen in a few years, and I will stand up and be counted when it counts.

The best way to prevent 9/11 or 7/7 or anything else happening again is to show the world that we don't care if their religious beliefs are different to ours, we care about them as people, as human beings. We want to learn about them.

This is my country now.

God. Bless. America!

Yes, this will totally erase any motivation of terrorists to commit attacks.

If I was from Boston I'd be really pissed at that comment he made. I'm a NYer and I've visited Boston. Wonderful, nice people who would all be very concerned if something happened in NYC. There's no rivalry that makes them HATE NYC. If someone in Boston HATES NYC because of baseball then that person has some serious issues to deal with.

It's too bewilderingly silly to be pissed about. It's bizarre that something like this would even occur to someone.

I'm glad to have you here in the US, as you obviously embrace American values. Unfortunately, not everyone in the world believes in those values-- in fact, not even everyone in the US does. The Taliban and al Qaeda and others like them are no different than the radical Christian groups we have here; they will stop at nothing to destroy everyone who is not them. You're right, though, that we must live proudly by our own beliefs. In the long run, the only way to beat the bad guys is to be better than they are.

The enemy is fundamentalism, in all its forms.

Whether you live in Boston, New York, or anywhere else in the world.

It's actually good that someone mentioned this. Irrational hate from Bostoners against New Yorkers. No difference to the irrational hate of Muslims against the rest of the world.

Or comments that are essentially "how dare you grieve with me, you're not even part of us?" I mean what the hell? It's exactly this "us vs. them" thing that's the fundamental problem of it all, and it even happens here, in a thread in memory of 9/11. This is just so fucked up.

^ Agreed.

And FWIW, I am sorry about what I said about Boston. I was way out of line. Exaggerated hyperbole from me, as usual. :alienblush:
