NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

How are the Broncos losing to the Jaguars? They've all been able to spend 5 or 20 minutes with Tim Tebow, their lives should be better for it.
I think Thom Brennaman was lying.

I think the Chicago coaching staff (Head and OC) should be fired after that embarrassment. How can you have 1st and goal and not score? That's almost impossible.

Fire Lovie Smith and fire Mike Martz and fire them right goddamn now.

Seriously, Lovie needs to be shot into the sun for that. The Lions have had like 20 yards of offense in the second half, and yet he turns down the surefire lead for an utterly indefensible move like that.

Ok, I have a question based on my interpretation of the rule. If someone catches the ball, goes into the endzone, and then spikes it for celebration, isn't that considered an incomplete pass? Johnson was on his ass for heaven's sake, the play has to be over there doesn't it? That might be the stupidest rule (Other than the delay of game process) in the NFL.

In terms of the letter of the law, it was the right call (on a terrible rule).

Megatron fucked up, big-time. He caught the ball in the air, and so possession is not established until he demonstrates complete control of the ball after his entire body has hit the ground. His hand was the only thing controlling the ball, so what his butt/knee/other hand did/did not do is irrelevant. It's a terrible rule but in terms of the actual letter of the law, it was the right call.

The problem is that the NFL has made its definition of a catch entirely too technical. In high school or college football, that's a touchdown.

Denver played pretty well overall. Our defense needs to work on being more consistant.... we would waffle between being an unstoppable force and a being trampled all game. Our running game still needs to get its act together. Moreno continues to show his agility and explosive ability, but he still seems to lack the ability to fight for yards. Orton and the recievers looked great through. If Denver can get more consistant on the other fronts, I think we should have a decent season.

I can't believe one game in and I'm almost ready to call it quits on the season. I mean, that game was a horror show but that was like the final straw.

Anybody else watching Eagles vs Packers? How many people have been injured already in this game, is it in the double digits yet? Seems like every second play someone breaks his leg.

Yeah, it's a body bag game so far. I've seen two Eagles players get what looked like concussions and then return to the field.

That decision was a perverse interpretation of the rule, it was NOT Correct even by the technical rule itself-Johnson DID NOT LOSE CONTROL OF THE BALL.

What he was doing was the equivalent of spiking the ball in celebration AFTER HE SCORED. You have to be allowed to let go of the ball sometime-is the receiver supposed to carry the ball back home with him in his car?

This is from a Bears fan by the way-The Lions were robbed by an absurd interpretation of a ridiculous rule.

And what is with the NFL and their technicalities, like the "complete the process" rule, the "tuck rule," etc.?

I don't think that the NBA or MLB has similar obscure rules in opposition to common sense.

I don't think anyone here would ever accuse me of being a Lions fan, but they weren't robbed. Johnson clearly fucked up. He was contacted in the air -- by definition, he had to maintain possession of the ball all the way down and complete the catch. He didn't begin to flip the ball to an official, he didn't hold it up to demonstrate that he held on (as Forte did on his end zone reception) -- as soon as the ball touched the ground, he just tossed it aside and took off to begin celebrating.

It's an absurd rule and a result of the NFL getting entirely too ridiculous when it comes to its definition of a "catch." But within the specifications of the rule as written, the officials made the right call. It's the same rule that cost the Raiders a win last year against the Chargers. I have to imagine it'll be looked at in the offseason.

Correct ruling. Terrible rule. But it's not like there's referee nullification in the NFL; officials can't say, "Well, this rule is stupid, so I'm going to ignore it and reverse the ruling on the field."

As someone who wanted the Bears to lose, I think the refs got that one right. It can be argued that it was turned over on a technicality, but the player needs to maintain possession of the ball all the way through. From what I'm seeing, he catches the ball, falls, and the ball is knocked out by the ground. How is what happened there any different from any other recieving play where the player has to come back up with the ball or at least demonstrate that he never lost it?

Eagles' post-game press conference today:

Reporter: Is Kevin Kolb your starting quarterback?
Reid: Yes.

Yesssssssssssss. It begins.

I'd feel almightily bent over by the league if I were the Lions or their fans right about now. Where did the league pull this "complete the process" BS out of, because I'm pretty certain I've never heard the term used before and it nullified a hard-earned touchdown on a technicality. We've seen far more controversial, close calls that were ruled as TDs in the past. And I say that as a Bears fan.

Lovie Smith, Mike Martz and the Bears' offense deserve to be laughed out of the league for failing to score with 1st and 10 from about two feet away from the endzone. You're down one point and instead of kicking a FG to take the lead against an utterly inept Lions offense, you fail as much as any team failed today. Impressive.

Asking Andy Reid a question like that is like asking a question to a politician. You don't really think he's going to say something that might contradict his earlier decisions, do you? Even if it's the right thing.
