Chuck Taylor Wedding!

Two of my best friends (the parents of my god children) are getting married next month, and they have decided that everyone should wear Chucks. Even the bride will be wearing Chucks under her wedding dress. I personally think this is awesome.

Now, the black pair of Chucks I own are kind of scuffed up, so I'm thinking I should buy a new "formal" pair of Chucks to wear with my suit. However, I am not sure if I should just get another pair of black Chucks or if I should get them in a different color.

These are Chuck Taylors!

I know someone who wore Chucks under her wedding dress. But that was a comfort thing. She reasoned there wasn't any point in wearing heels where no one could see them.

If you're in a tux, than black is the way to go. The Tenth Doctor would never make a fashion faux pas. If you aren't, though, you should probably get a pair to match the color of the suit you will wear.

Well, the 2-year olds are going to be the Best Man and Maid of Honor, and they will be wearing Chucks for the sake of being adorable. However, the idea has spread, and now they are trying to get everybody at the wedding to wear Chucks.

My suit is black, but I'm thinking I might get some Chucks to match my shirt and tie.

That sounds awesome! Chuck Taylors are just the greatest sneakers around.

Black Chucks for the tux. You can get a new pair for something like $30, maybe even less. If you're going to dress up, dress up.

Yeah, but I'm not wearing a tux. I'm just wearing a suit. I kind of want to get blue ones that will go with the blue shirt I'm going to wear.

Sneakers? I thought Chuck Taylor was the dude who's getting married. But then, I'm not much of a shoe guy.

^^ You're talking to a guy who's totally oblivious to fashion trends. If weather and social norms permitted, I'd go around naked.

Some might know them better as Converse All-Stars.

As to my original response here, I just think it's pretty lazy to get all dressed up (tux or no) along with worn out shoes. If this were a matter of having to spend a small fortune on a new pair of fancy schmancy dress shoes, I'd understand. But Chucks are far from expensive and it is a formal occasion. If you're going to dress up, dress up.

I think this is an awesome idea! And, FWIW, I say go with the a new pair of a different color, both because it will be nice to match your shirt and because it will give you another color to wear afterward; who needs two pair of black Chucks?

On a slightly related note, when I graduated from Law School -- which was intended by the school to be a very formal affair -- a group of us all decided to wear red Chucks. There happened to be an old Army/Navy Surplus store nearby that was going out of business and had them super cheap. It was fun, and got lots of comments (both positive and negative.)

Yeah, but I mean, Chucks have been around for decades!

As 005 said, people probably know them better as Converse All-Stars now. I haven't heard the nickname Chucks in quite some time!

Fun idea for the wedding, I love wearing them. You'd be safe with black but matching your shirt might look neat.

I love the idea. I also love the videos where the wedding party enter the church (or whatever) dancing to music rather than that old "here comes the bride" march.

Regarding the Chucks: i guess i am really really old. When i first saw your thread I thought you meant "CHUCKS" as in adult diapers. And i was like, WTF?

My sister and her husband opted for customized Chucks for themselves and their wedding party a few years ago, high-tops for the men and low for the women. They were black canvas with black rubber and red highlights, and the wedding date embroidered in red on the back seam. Converse offers design-your-own service on its website.

I have worn Chuck Taylors through several fads over the past 25 years. I used to have a pair with black leather uppers that I wore for "dressy" occasions in my late teen years. They were nice for wet weather, too; they probably still offer them. Chucks are are not made in the USA anymore, but they do seem to offer more varieties than they used to.

Well, yeah, Converse is the brand. But saying "Converse" to me would be like saying "Nike" or "Adidas." It doesn't tell me what kind of shoe it is.

For the record, when you go to the Converse website, the very first shoe they list is "Chuck Taylor."
