Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS MAYBE

Joel_Kirk

Rear Admiral
You know, it's interesting. As I type this, I'm afraid of spoiling the film....but, technically, there is nothing to spoil. (However, for the sake of courtesy...)

2 and 3 were bad...(although, I did like that Milla Jovovich returns to her red skirt/boots outfit in part 3 briefly)...

And the 4th film...

*sigh*

Bad things:

No characterization, certain characters were stereotypical; no story; and, just when you think there may be some actual expansion on everything, the film ends.

Unfortunately, Anderson is already talking about a 5th film.

:scream:

Stop.

Just stop now.:wah:

And we still don't learn what happened to Jill Valentine from the 2nd film!

Good things:

*Ali Larter was actually hotter in this film than the last. (I don't know what happened).

*The gal that played K-Mart was attractive.

*Milla Jovovich was hot and tough as usual.

*I saw the film in 3-D, so the visuals were enhanced; it still wasn't worth $14...

*The guy who portrayed Wesker was actually trying to portray the character as he was in the 5th game. I think he succeeded; but, a movie is supposed to expand on characters...which this movie didn't. (To continue with what was 'good' however, some action sequences from the 5th game actually makes it in).

*The big behemoth character, also from the 5th film makes his appearance...just for the sake of fan-service...(similar to the way Pyramid Head was inserted in the Silent Hill film).

The 'good thing' is seeing him in action.

*Ali Larter as Claire Redfield, wears her red vest...

DISCLAIMER: Excuse any typos and grammar. Joel is just coming from a late, midnight showing...which ended at 2am; and has to get up in a couple of hours to face a calm, but lengthy day. (Of course, he is hungry....and is enjoying 2 'things' of yogurt and a nice caesar salad).

...But damn that movie was horrible.

3 out of 10

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

I saw the original but I really don't care for these movies...I am a Milla fan and all...but I most likely would buy this film for my Milla library and never actually watch it.

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

well, i mean we all knew it was gonna be bad from the start. still, i enjoy a train wreck so i'm still gonna watch it.

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

I haven't watched 1 & 2 for ages but I remember thinking they weren't that great, and I never saw 3. But I thought the trailer for this looked ok and with nothing better to do today I went to see it.

And I'm so glad I did, it was fucking awesome!

Haha, so much fun, I loved it. Yes it's hardly Citizen Kane, yes its no Oscar winner, yes they're all just cyphers with no characters, etc etc. Every criticism one can throw at this film is so obvious by now why would you even go see this if you were so bothered about it? It's like going to watch Saw 6 and complaining about "torture porn" and gore. Why are you watching it then?

I just went along for the ride with this and enjoyed every minute of it. Plus the 3D was excellent, proper decent 3D like Avatar, not the tacked on later crap like Clash of the Titans.
It's basically like slow-mo gun action porn. Just release that inner 14-year-old boy within you and enjoy it. The scenes of Alice slow-mo shooting the zombies outside the prison was just fun incarnate.
And plus Milla Jovovich just looks incredible, esp with those two shotguns on her back :D

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

The first one is still the best one of the three.

Haven't seen the fourth yet, but I might go next week, if I have nothin' better to do.

My inner 14-year-old boy still didn't care for it, but each to his or her own....;)

Yes, Milla Jovovich indeed looked incredible...especially with those two katana blades on her back...

The British chick was pretty hot, too.

The first one is still the best one of the three.

Haven't seen the fourth yet, but I might go next week, if I have nothin' better to do.

Yeah, I still think the 1st one is superior, too...

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

Meh, I'm a huge fan of the games but the movies were average action drivel at best.

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

The woman leading the umbrella attack at the end is supposed to be Jill. Its not as clear as it should be because Sienna Guillory portrays the character with her natural long blonde hair instead 's Jill's traditional medium brunette look.

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

^ Really? Cool, didn't realise that. I hope that if they do make no.5, that like Paul WS Anderson has suggested, Leon Kennedy is in it

Yeah. I went to the screening with 3 lovely ladies in costume-- one as Alice in the red dress, one as Jill from the 2nd film, & one as Claire from the 3rd film.
I spotted Jill in the closing credits and wondered where she was, then her post-credits scene came on. When it did, the woman I was with dressed as Jill squealed with unimaginable delight!
(There were also a couple guys with us, one in a white lab coat & the other in a suit & tie with an Umbrella Corp. ID badge. But they're guys, so I don't think anyone was looking at them.)

It was kind of an early show at 6:05pm. Still, the theater seemed pretty empty for opening night. I'm surprised. A week earlier, I went to a skate shop that was giving out free preview passes. When I got there, they told me that they'd run out of passes within 5 minutes of when they started distributing them.

Overall, I give the movie a solid C+. I'm not a huge zombie fan and the 3-D glasses kinda irritate my eyes sometimes. But still, it delivers on some solid action and a handful of bemusing character moments. I liked the movie producer & the NBA star. Alice actually changes her facial expression in this one and has a few kinda funny bits. The script could certainly use a punch up (Where's Joss Whedon when you need him?) but it's much looser and easier to have fun with than Apocalypse or Extinction. (Oddly enough, I've never seen the original Resident Evil, even though I bought it on a blind buy a couple years ago.)

Now, I'm just crossing my fingers hoping that Screen Gems will deliver on Underworld IV.

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

I just saw RE:A and I'd give it a C/C+

This is the first one I've seen in the theaters and is nearly a year to the date when I saw the first three. Every Halloween I pick some horror related movies and watch them for 4-5 weeks so I played catch up on the first three then all within about 10 days of each other.

I don't recall the Jill character from Apocolypse. but a quick look at IMDB shows pic 20 of her with the short brunette bob. Wonder why they changed it here? Looking at those pics jogs my memory of the film now.
I do recall the Redfield character's and K-Mart from Extinction. I understand the Redfield's are in the videogame but is K-Mart?
I knew the minute I saw Crystal she was toast but Kacey Barnfield was good looking eye candy while she lasted.

So, why a C+, here is why.
I know we have to take some things for granted. I've filled in plenty of holes before in a story if necessary. Did I forget something about Alice being able to be cloned? I honestly don't recall something to that affect in Extinction. If not just 'going with it' on multiple Alice's right out of the gate is a bit much.
Also, I don't recall the zombies doing that 'squid mouth' attack in the first movies. Is that a mutation we just accept and move along with?

I did like seeing familiar faces and thought the action sequences really were great. Not a bad 3-D movie but not as awesome as I'd hoped. It was billed as "the first action movie in 3-D" but maybe that was expectations on my part.

If there is a 2-D option at your cineplex go that route but if your fan of the franchise or just zombies I'd say give it a shot.

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

I got passes to see it Thursday in IMAX 3D, so I went with a few friends. None of us had seen the prior three films, so it was .. interesting. No idea what was up with the big dude with the axe thingy, and did I hear right, they named one character after the chain of stores, K-Mart? Ali Larter was in it, and as usual, can't act to save her life. My gods, that woman must be magic on the Hollywood casting couch, because they still hire her.

Anyway ... I was interested enough in the movie, and to figure out the "human again?" thing that I stopped by Wal-Mart tonight and picked up the "RE Trilogy" box set for 13 bucks. And apparently there's a cartoon "RE Redemption" or something like that? I found it in the five dollar bin, and will give it a watch eventually.

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

The films are pretty much on par but this one was closer to 1 than 2 or 3. The opening scenes were a bit mindless the supporting characters in the middle were given a fair amount of screen time each so that it wasn't immediately obvious who was cannon fodder and the producer, while over the top was an unsubtle in-joke. Overall it was still fun.

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

^The "cartoon" is called Degeneration and is actually based on the games. It's also better than all of the live action movies combined, yet is still only decent itself.

Conversley, I found the cartoon to be horrible and loved the live action movies a lot.

I need to go see this film.

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

Will there still be a bunch of people who get whittled down by zombies/other stuff one by one until there's only the main cast left?

Will there still be a shady company/organization/person who is the source of all things evil?

If so.. what's the point of watching this movie?

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

^
Milla Jovovich looking amazing, shooting zombies in the head with a shotgun full of quarters. Ali Larter fighting a massive monster with a huge hammer axe thing, getting very wet in the process. In glorious 3D.

Good enough for me :D

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

I saw this last night. I had a feeling it would be bad going in, so I had prepared to let myself just go along for the ride and have some mindless fun...but I was bored. Really, really bored. I actually liked the first 3 movies so I was really disapponted.

I fully understand guys enjoying all the eye candy...but I lost Oded Fehr in the last movie and no one was considerate enough to find a suitable replacement for me!

Should I hope for better luck in #5 or should I just bail out now? ;-)

Re: Resident Evil: Afterlife directed by Paul W.S. Anderson-SPOILERS M

Just saw it! Don't see it in 3-D it was blurry as shit.

The opening twenty minutes was amazing... but then they ruined it. Ugh. The rest of the movie is much more of the same zombie movie you've seen a million times. Still, it was better than the third which I didn't care for. The action scenes were certainly cool (even if someone has seen The Matrix way too many times).

I'd rank them 2 > 4 > 1 > 3. I really liked 2.
