THE DARK TOWER will be made into a movie

The first thing I thought was, "they're basing a movie off a board game ?"

Though I do remember it being a pretty good game, for the time.

That flashed through my mind as well despite having read the books. You gotta admit though a movie based on the game would have to make more sense than Battleship.

Well it's a sci fi Western, right? And they need a lead who will do TV and movies, so that knocks out a lot of the Hollywood heavyweights. I'd like to see Timothy Olyphant but he's already got a hit show, darn.

I hope this flies. It's just the thing both Star Trek and Star Wars needs to start doing in a more organized and coherent fashion.

Viggo Mortenson would be awesome.

You could easily collapse the 6 books into 3 movies. Wizard and Glass was really a prequel so that could be omitted or just inserted as flashbacks in each movie.

Movie 1:Gunslinger/Drawing of the Three/Wastelands up until they board the train
Movie 2: 2nd half of Wastelands/Wolves/Song of Susannah
Movie 3: The Dark Tower

Wow, this could be a pretty awesome way of storytelling. I'll say thankee-sai if it works out :techman:

More of a dark fantasy with a main character who exhibits traits associated with Westerns. There is a lot of world and time hopping in the series. Roland is from a world/time that's comes across as the Middle Ages with sixguns. Other characters include several from "our world's" NYC: a wheelchair bound woman from the 1960s, a drug addct from the 1980s and young boy from the 1970s. Plus a host of characters from King's other works show up.

I'd heard about the Battleship thing, so that's probably what made me think that way.

Y'know that damn game (Dark Tower) is like $200+ on ebay.

You should read the books. They are pretty good, the first three are my favorites.

The plan is to start with the feature film, and then create a bridge to the second feature with a season of TV episodes. That means the feature cast—and the big star who’ll play Deschain—also has to appear in the TV series before returning to the second film.

So if they get Daniel Craig as Roland he has to star in it. That's interesting

I've not read these books, so I can't comment on it as an adaptation, but the proposed format is interesting to me. It's something I thought of years ago not long after watching the first "X-Files" movie. I thought it might've been an interesting experiment to use movies to occasionally bridge seasons of a TV show, like "X-Files" or "Star Trek." Throw a few more bucks at them than the average episode and even if the movie doesn't do $100 mil, if it only cost $10 to make then you can recoup that pretty easily and you've got another DVD to toss into stores for people to buy.

I'll be looking to see how this one pans out. I think it's a pretty interesting experiment.

That would be one shitty looking movie if it cost a grand total of $10 to make!

Isn't Roland supposed to be like in his twenties or something? (I bought all seven books on my iPad but I haven't gotten around to reading them yet. )

That being said, I have a great idea for a theme song to the TV series. Just use Rawhide...

*ahem*

Roland Roland Roland,
Keep that ka-tet, Roland,
Roland Roland Roland...Deschain
:D

I picked up the first one and I'll be honest. I got bored. But that doesn't mean I won't check out the movie/TV series. Sometimes the visual/action element makes a big difference.

The first book is completely different from the second in tone and storytelling, and I found it a hard read too. I'm not sure about the rest, I haven't gotten to them yet.

I think The Gunslinger was written when King was 19, so it is pretty different from his later stuff, including later books in the series from what I understand. I think he revised it since its first publishing to remove some of its "written by a very fresh writer"ness.

the second book really is so different from the first that it took me a while to get use to it.

but to me, the Dark Tower series is one example where i don't even think they should make a movie. i just don't think whatever they put on the screen will live up to the images i see when i read the books.

The first book was very westerm focused and isn't as strong as the next two. I thought the next two books were much better since the main character gets the chance to visit much more interesting places.

The second book also introduces several cool characters.

What do you think of the series overall? I felt that it really goes downhill in the later books and after a while it turns goofy "meta" which I wasn't so crazy about.

I'd be quite happy if they just skipped "Wizard and the Glass". That was such a huge disappointment. I feel the series peaked with #3 and went downhill from there; didn't like the ending.
