So Rush Limborg's thread about Dax's previous host got me thinking about who the next host will be. Whatever happens to Ezri, she won't be around forever. So far we've had...

    • A somewhat grandmotherly politician (Lela)
    • A nervous, socially inept but brilliant engineer (Tobin)
    • A hyper, emotional Olympic gymnast (Emony)
    • Another motherly politician (Audrid)
    • A carefree pilot (Torias)
    • A psychopathic murderer/musician (Joran)
    • A Klingon loving, heavy partying, womanizing, stubborn, opinionated Ambassador (Curzon)
    • A Klingon party girl scientist (Jadzia)
    • And a...an Ezri, however you'd describe her. :)

So what do you think the next one will be like? I'm picturing Halikan Dax, a male host, intelligent, tough but reserved. Doesn't like Klingons for once, having grown tired of them after being around them for parts of three lifetimes. He's the tenth host and Dax isn't sure he wants to live on indefinitely, so he has a more fatalistic view of life than the others, maybe Halikan subconsciously tries to get himself in trouble/hurt/killed. He isn't sure what he wants to do with his life and leaves Starfleet to get in touch with all the personalities he's been before. But that's just my idea, what do you guys think? The name came out of thin air, by the way. I'd love to hear more ideas.

well, in my not yet published fanfic series. the next host is a trill male named Perjon Dax. handsame, a thirty-ish, former starfleet commander and a brilliant tactician who retires after his (currently unnamed) ship, and most of the crew, including his best friend, is killed in a battle against the klingons. he's a heavy drinker and an overall screwup ever since the ship was destroyed.

he is recruited by Ducane of the Relativity to stop a cardassian agent, Gul Narale, the grandson of Skrain Dukat, from blowing up san fransiscio in 2008. he is also killed by the above mentioned cardassian. however since the city is eventually saved by another agent sent by Ducane, his fate is (for now) uncertain. dunno if i'll bring him back sometime, somewhere in the future. i have a faint idea of having him in my other story (Starship Kir'Shara). part of Captain Sulhir Vaz's "accidents" involving timetravel.
but its only a thought for now. i busy with writing two Kir'Shara "books" and translating the 16 Star trek: From ashes episodes to english...

not sure if this is the thing you were looking for but i had writers block. had to take my focus off writing my story for a while.

That's an interesting take, ares93, but I've gotta go with Tiberius' idea, mainly because it's so shockingly similar to what I'd conjured up.

I had the idea of a more fatalistic Dax as the tenth host in mind as well, for similar reasons. I didn't think of the 'hates Klingons' angle, but I envisioned a story arc whereby he/she decides to get very close with all the previous hosts and the symbiont is beginning to feel a bit old, itself, and there's a dramatic theme of whether or not to keep going all that much longer. And it's probably a bit tough on the host, no doubt.

It's a nice contrast, too, I'd say. Ezri, as Quark said, is so "young, and beautiful, and full of life"--innocent, idealistic, optomistic towards the possibilities of existence.

It would be a nice contrast to get a world-wise, worn, cynical fellow. Frankly, I'd say it fits nicely with ares93's concept of a "heavy drinker and overall screwup". Perhaps the loss of his ship and crew caused the bitter pessimism within...?

Perhaps we could have an ep where he performs the Rite of Emergence, and conjures up Ezri, as a means of finding encouragement, a reason to go on....

Ezri, sitting beside the new host, makes a remark about how she once went through this with a certain influential Cardassian and he was half as challenging as the host is.

Actually, ares, your idea doesn't seem that much different than mine, and the whole Ducane storyline sounds interesting to me too.
Jeff and Rush, thanks, I'm glad you like it. The rite of emergence sounds cool too. :) Maybe he even does it more than once with multiple hosts...sort of a self induced internal zhian'tara?

thanks, and actually, id be surprised if whatever we come up with wouldn't be similar. number ten is apparently the black sheep of the family. and since this type of thing has never been done before, its only the authors perspective that makes the difference. but we can agree on one thing, he's not the most successful people in life.

but must say that i never really gave this character a chance since his part is a subplot and he dies in the beginning. but overall, the tenth host, may it he Helikian, Perjon or someone else, has a lot of potential. now that Tiberius brought him out of cryostasis i might give him another go.
thats actually a great idea. i 've already done that once though with Ezri stuck in a damaged shuttle, conjuring up Tobin. but instead got Curzon...
actually it was your fanfic that gave me the idea, until then, i had never though of the rite somehow going wrong. or that wrong people could show up.

EDIT: Jeff / Tiberius: i must say, Dax getting old is not something ive though of. mainly because my own Trill character, Sulhir Vaz is 742 (28) years old. but its a good idea nonetheless.

Well, one thing's for certain: I'd say everyone who has posted thus far has had a great idea. Maybe we should all band together and get something published!

got more if needed. Vedzin, Fremerin, Rantin, Yeitak. (these are all male given names i've used.)

i like Helikan too but i keep mixing it up with Helkiakan Girha who is the bad guy XO in my fanfic and it gives a bad ring to our dear Dax. but that's only me. other people shouldn't have a problem with it.

(aside from Rush if had read my fanfic. Helkiakan Girha kidnaps Ezri and almost kills her...)

EDIT: Yurius sounds nice too. Poll perhaps?

Well, Dax might find it humorous that his name sounds like the name of the person who almost killed Dax once... :)

Poll's a good idea, in my humble opinion.

After two female hosts in a row, I would definitely imagine the next host as male. The joining would also be a more traditional one, as opposed to the suddenness of the Ezri joining and initial rejection that Jadzia experienced by the Symbiosis Commission. The host would be a bit more conservative prior to the joining but the Dax symbiant would obviously loosen him up a bit. This host would also choose not to reacquaint himself with Dax's past friends since the friendship between Curzon and Sisko influenced the relationships of the next two joinings of the Dax symbiant.

Lastly his occupation would be centered on doing something on the Trill home world, as opposed to another career in Starfleet. With experience in the sciences, and an understanding of the human mind, maybe a career in law enforcement. Just off the top of my head anyway.

the joining must of course be a traditional one. we've already had our "accident". interesting take on the matter considering his occupation. -- dax in law enforcement? what about Joran? wouldnt that be a bit, dunno wrong? on the other hand. ezri's psy training, jadzia's science skills and his own investigative skills would make a splendid trill sherlock holmes, wouldnt you say?

No, and quite the opposite, having a direct insight into a mind of a serial killer would give him a great advantage as a detective or criminal profiler. They have to figure out how the killers' minds work, and Dax would be a natural in that respect, thanks to Joran's memories.

yes, i'm well aware of that. and i completely agree. but is still have a problem with this case. having an insight into a murderer's mind can also be a very dangerous thing. and its not something you should take lightly. and this isnt you every day criminal profiler but an actual murderer. having studied murder or similar crimes and actually committing them are two different things. first thing my teacher said when i started his class two years ago.

"Be careful when you fight the monsters, lest you become one." ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

    also, i study criminal psychology.

^You both have valid points. He would make one heck of a detective, but Joran's memories would both help him and give him a bit of a dark side. That could threaten to overwhelm him and could be one of the reasons he looks to his other past hosts for a reason to go on - trying to balance the 1 'evil' host with the good hosts.
I like the idea of a detective/law enforcement...being a Dax, he'd often 'do, not think' and drive his superiors crazy although he'd almost always catch the bad guy. Very interesting.
Not connecting with his past friends makes sense to me too...time to move on after two lives with these people, though he wouldn't be unfriendly if he happened to cross paths with them.
