Wiped! Doctor who's missing episodes story

Some of the discussions in this thread made me think of this place
http://pandorabox.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general
I always thought this was a hoax, but I have to wonder if there aren't really groups like this.
that one seems like pure poppycock and nonsense..

I read through some of the threads.. pretty superficial and vague and all to make themselves seem more mysterious and the money aspect, the 12,500 membership fee.. what a ridiculous price tag.. screenings and such.

they could meet in a basement and hire a few thugs for security for far less.. and still get what they wanted.. I would think most immeasurably wealthy are frugal to the point of hideousness..at least the rich I have met are so.. why else do you think they have gotten so wealthy.. by being so cheap..

anyhow, I seriously doubt they are screening any missing who merchandise and I figure those that are wealthy and do, do so in an email network or by phone and private auction basis..

they are probably a bunch of college students who are experimenting with a new type of hydroponic weed, and lost or missing episodes of mystery science theatre 3000, in addition to their study of sociological paranoia built around their false pseudo secret-society, obviously placed on the net to be found by others..

Hah - is that Pandora site still online?

I love how a forum set up as a joke (which went wrong when someone prematurely leaked it) is still being taken seriously...

I was surprised to see it still up and running. I never took it seriously though. If they were really a "secret" group they would have never set up a forum where the content is publicly accessible.
I do remember quite a few people thinking it was real a long time ago.
I don't know much about the place or who was behind it. I had no idea that it was let out prematurely.

I certainly don't buy the argument that "The Invasion" didn't sell enough copies. Frankly, if 2 Entertain wasn't selling enough copies of these things, we wouldn't be seeing them continue to release them, with a promise to continue until at least 2013*, now would we.

What isn't there to buy? The Invasion sold very well compared to other releases at the time, however 2|Entertain bought the animations from BBCi )or whoever it was) for a significantly lower amount than it would cost were they to make it from scratch.

IIRC, the animated episodes were either done as a below cost proof of concept by Cosgrove Hall in hopes that BBC Video & 2|Entertain would be interested in popping for more or Cosgrove Hall happened to already have the money to do it because it had already been allocated to them for a cancelled sequel to "Scream of the Shalka." (BTW, how do I type that vertical slash in "2|Entertain"?)

The most likely story to be recovered is, in theory, Marco Polo. It's an oddity that it's missing as the rest of seasons one (barring Reign of Terror whose fate during the 19774 Cyprus war seems to be well stablished)

How do you know about a war that happened 17,764 years in the future? You're not a former companion, are you?;)

But seriously, what happened in the Cyprus War?

In 1974, Turkey invaded northern Cyprus in support of the Turkish Cypriots (who had disagreements with the Greek Cypriots), over a dispute that should probably be discussed in The Neutral Zone rather than here.

I don't need all the filthy "My side! Your side!" details but what, praytell, was at the heart of the dispute?

It depends where you are - on my keyboard you get it by pressing Shift and \. Apparently it's an option on the character map, but there's no ALT code to go with it...

Hmm. Testing... | ...Testing over.

I guess it works. Strange, because on the keyboard, there's a small space between the 2 halves of the vertical line. Fascinating.:vulcan:

In broad brush, as a usefully positioned island in the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus was regularly taken over by the latest rising power for at least 2000 years, starting with Alexander the Great, and then more recently the Ottoman Empire who ceded it to Britain in 1878 (after the Russian-Turkish war).

As so often in these post-imperial situations, this left Cyprus with two major ethnic populations, Greek and Turkish descended, both of whom had been used to being the more priviliged under one overlord power or another.

After World War II, Greek Cypriot nationalists began a guerilla campaign to force Britain out, which led to independence around 1960.
However, many of the Greek Cypriot nationalists wanted to merge with Greece rather than be independent, which didn't go down well with the Turkish community, who'd obviously be happier back under Turkish control.
So, there's communal in-fighting from the mid-1960s, culminating in the Turkish invasion of the northern half of the island in 1974. Ironically, this led to the collapse of the military dictatorship then ruling Greece (Turkey also had a military regime at the time, but that survived longer).
