TOS Box set differences?

Well, I recently picked up the final box set to polish off my TOS collection. Its the old style ones, Solid box split vertically. At Walmart they have newer versions in clear boxes that look like they are split vertically. Is there any major differences between these sets? Do they have the new effects put in instead of the original ones (I prefer the original ones)? Are the newer ones a higher quality when it comes to audio or video? More bonus features?

If you have a player; you should really look at getting the Blu-ray sets. You'll literally see classic Trek in a new light, with a choice of remastered or original (well, nearly).

You mean "enhanced or original". It's all remastered.

The new DVD sets are remastered and enhanced versions only. There were two versions of these; the double-sided HD-DVD editions (HD-DVD was for season 1 only; seasons 2 and 3 lacked the second HD side and were just normal DVDs without the disc art on top) and the new slim boxsets that came out at the same time as the recent Blu-ray sets. Neither or these have the original SFX. The original SFX can only be seen in the previous DVD sets (the opaque yellow/red/blue plastic boxes that split open vertically) or as an viewing option on the new Blu-ray sets.

Yes, I'm familiar with all of those releases - indeed, I own them! My recommendation for the BD's was made purely on a picture quality basis; which they deliver in spades by and large.

Hmm. I had considered getting the Blu-Ray versions (I own a PS3), but I heard the transfer was off on the Blu-Rays, specifically that the colors were off. So I got the vertically split ones to get the original FX shots.

So, are the Blu-Ray versions plagued with color issues, or are they alright? I may go ahead and splurge and try a season, and if I like them put the TOS set I have up on eBay.

The colours are probably more 'accurate' if anything, since they were rescanned from the original film material.
I've only seen the standard definition versions but they look pretty normal to me. Kirk's tunic may be a tad greener than we're used to.

I'm a home cinema enthusiast of many years, going way back to LaserDisc in the early 90's. Really, the BD's are by light years the best way to view TOS. Far from being off, the colours are vibrant and extremely well presented IMHO. Contrast has been boosted, but not to the detriment of shadow delination, again the best TOS has ever looked. Although variable from episode to episode, and even scene to scene, detail is outstanding overall and leaves all previous home video releases standing. Highly recommeded to all TOS fanatics.

Thank God at least someone knows what "remastered" means. (It doesn't mean "new special FX added.") I was going to post this, but I've done it quite a few times and, quite frankly, no one cares. They're still going to use the word "remastered" to mean "the one with the new FX," and, trust me, you'll make yourself mad trying to correct them all.

And, IMO, if you haven't seen the blu-ray you really haven't seen Star Trek.

Umm.. actually I'm quite aware what remastered means - thank God . During my time reading these boards (and elsewhere) the whole TOS project with the new VFX has been continually referred to as TOS Remastered, or, TOS-R. I was simply going along with the status quo. I believe most fans are perfectly aware of the differences and are not as uninformed as you believe. Like me, they simply accept the popular nomenclature and don't "make themselves mad" over such a triviality.

You may be aware of the difference, but I don't think most fans are. Hence every thread started about "TOS remastered" is all about the only part of the show that wasn't remastered -- the new FX.
