In the JJ-verse: is it time for an overt Star Wars shout-out?

If a JJ-Trek character off-handedly referenced "Star Wars"...

  • Ugh, no. Bad enough that JJ-Trek is so Wars-y as is.

Trek has explicitly referenced much Earth culture, from Shakespeare to Superman. But while there have been coy, unspoken nods to Star Wars, there's never been a moment comparable to, say, that line of Brad Pitt's in Seven where he says that the killer's hypothetical intelligence "doesn't make him Yoda."

Back in the original, more or less "pure" timeline, I was all for maintaining the discreet separation between the franchises. But now that JJ's interpretation has Wars'ed-up the series, maybe it wouldn't be so amiss for one of the characters to acknowledge that, much like The Day the Earth Stood Still, Star Wars hasn't been fully forgotten by human culture.

What say you all?

I think it would be too much like Stargate or Farscape. That sort of thing worked for them but I think Trek's got too much invested in it's universe (which IMO, between 700+ episodes, 11 movies, 500+ books and whatnot, has far more depth to it than the others) to break the fourth wall like that and get away with it. You might as well have Scotty say "Hey, this reminds me of that episode of Star Trek!" next time a Klingon sticks an agonizer on Chekov.

Besides, isn't R2-D2 in the skies over Vulcan, the Millenium Falcon fighting the Borg and Pike saying "Punch it!" a couple of times enough?

As a Trekkie, I'd prefer nods to other Treks snuck in (which I think they did a brilliant job of last time, wheras some Enterprise episodes went too far and hit viewers over the head with a big stick labelled "Continuity Porn!")

Star Trek (2009) already quoted the lines, "punch it!" and "I hope you know what you're doing," as well as an easter egg featuring R2-D2. Does a sequel really need overt references as well?

Overall, I prefer more subtle references as well.

No movie needs overt, blatant references to pop culture. But, if done right (in a well-timed, intelligent manner), they can be very entertaining.

Should they do it? We already got a Nokia phone and a Beastie Boys song, so at this point, I'd tend to say "Why the hell not?".

I'm a pretty big geek, saw the movie in theatres twice, and didn't catch any of those references until I read about them later. "I hope you know what you're doing" - if that's a reference, it's one of the most obscure I've ever heard.

And no one's saying an overt shout-out is needed; I'm just asking a fun, light question. ;)

A song that name-drops Spock... ugh, wait, no, that scene didn't happen. I don't know what you're talking about. What scene? :p

@KingDaniel: was referencing Superman breaking the fourth wall? I can totally understand an aversion to direct SW references/shout-outs in Trek, but equating such a thing with a Trek shout-out in a Trek movie is hardly fair, imho.

Uhhh... that's not exactly exclusive dialog of Star Wars lore. That's like saying "I'm looking for my wife" is totally Jerry Maguire.

A Star Wars reference would be Scotty saying, "That's no moon."

"I'm James T. Kirk and I'm here to rescue you" wouldn't be a Star Wars shout out either.

Dude, I don't know how you could miss "punch it!" :cardie:
For my 2 cents, I think the hidden/semi-hidden references are more fun than an overt one, so I'm for keeping them hidden. I'm also for hoping that XII will pull more to a sci-fi than sci-fan direction, now that it's got its foot in the door (or **** in **********)

Have the next movie cliffhang at the end, a-la The Empire Strikes Back.

That was a powerful moment which instantly assured my ass was going to be firmly planted in a theater seat at next films first screening.

I only ask the 3rd installment NOT suck, as RotJ did.

Nobody is trying to turn Star Trek into Star Wars, but it's also equally unreasonable to assume that one cannot influence the other.

How about the next time Sulu has a sword fight, he makes light saber noises and the guy he's fighting actually asks him why he's doing that? :)

I would like to see something like:

Spock: (does Vulcan salute) Live long and prosper.

Character: (Attempts Vulcan salute and fails) Yeah, well, may the Force be with you.

That would make my day. :)

MENACING BAD GUY: What's that sound? Why are
you making that noise?

SULU: You're the genius, you figure it out.

MBG: As the menacing bad guy who's getting in
your face at this particular moment, I demand
that you to answer the question!

SULU: Well I'm not telling, Mr. Menacing Bad Guy.
What di... What, now - that doesn't frustrate
you, does it? My lack of cooperation - that... that doesn't make you angry?

MBG: (to Kirk, speaking through clenched teeth) I
don't suppose you'd care to explain what your
friend here is doing, making with the funny
noises?

(Kirk shrugs, smiling)

MBG:
