The solution is a patented D pad that switches from a disc configuration to a raised plus sign by twisting the pad around. The new pad will also feature a revised color scheme with buttons in shades of gray instead of the candy-colored gems Microsoft has used since the debut of the original Xbox. Hryb said the pad also boasts other improvements, though he didn't specify what those were.
Sounds cool, but I wish they would keep the colored buttons....

Yeah, the 360 controller's biggest weakness has always been the feel of the d-pad when you play a genre like fighting games.

There really aren't too many other games that require the use of the d-pad for much more than simple control or menu-access, and you don't exactly need the best d-pad in the world for that kind of thing.

And if you care that much about the feel of your d-pad when you play SF4, you've probably already bought a 3rd party controller. I also agree that $65 USD seems a bit high, they should simply make it the new 360 controller if it's that good, and price it the same as the current wireless unit.

they should just bring back the Turbo Touch 360, you guys remember that? but yea, im a recent convert from pad to stick for fighting games and will not go back.

I could never use a pad for fighting games, going all the way back to the NES I always had joysticks.

I have fond memories of 20lbs monstrous one I had for my Genesis.

I had that for the Genesis too, as well as the arcade stick for the NES.

I don't mind a pad for playing fighting games, but I have to hold it differently than I usually do to make it functional. I typically place the right edge of the pad against my leg so I can use my left thumb to operate the d-pad and I can press down on the right side buttons with my fingers as I would a keyboard or arcade stick. You can't play a fighting game well with all-thumbs, it just doesn't work as well when you're trying to push multiple buttons at once.

I don't see any need for the change, and actually I like the Multi-Colored Skittle Buttons for X/Y/A/B. Boring gray action buttons are no bueno.

And the award for the most underwhelming hardware announcement of 2010 goes to...

I like how the controller apparently features 'other improvements' besides those listed. What, did they also reduce outer body thickness by 0.35mm, achieving a corresponding 2% reduction in production costs or something? C'mon Microsoft, don't keep us in suspense.

I find it funny that this "new and improved" controller is coming out just before the "Look ma, no hands!" blitz of Kinect.
