Journey's End as the Doctor Who series finale

I think the end of series five works better for me if I had to have a series finale. I love many things about Journey's End, the comic book style cross-over between the three shows being one of them. And while the end with Donna is very well done and moving...it's still depressing. Ditto for the Doctor in the Tardis before the Titanic hits.

Whereas The Big Bang ends with the restoration of the universe, Doctor...Amy and Rory finally get married...we see the Doctor finally letting loose and enjoying life with the dancing bit....and at the end, there's still a menace out there and the Doctor and his companions head off into adventure.

Journey's End could be the most stupid load of rubbish ever broadcast. It was appalling. Worse still, I was watching it with friends who didn't watch Doctor Who, and it was only on because I wanted to see it. I was so embarrassed. It was a shame, because The Stolen Earth was quite promising, and I thought surely RTD wouldn't pull the same idiot tricks 4 years runnings.

He should never work again.

The worst bits about it are the kitchen sink factor (squeezing in far too many companions) and the resolution. Having that many companions, you might think on paper is a good idea. In practice, it was really, really lame and imo only served to diminish each of them. All that running around the TARDIS console - on paper, probably looked ultra brilliant. In practice - lame.

The resolution is just the icing on the shitcake.

I'd have hoped that Davros' return in the new series would have been with a much better story, but it was not to be..

well I liked much about that episode, but I would not like to have it as the series finale..and I am glad we got the End of Time..

though I would have wanted more Time Lord action cause I love the time lords..

anyhow, the only thing that truly bothered me about Journey's end was the tardis pulling earth across the universe in record time.. that just seemed way to unrealistic..

I've always thought that if/when the revived Doctor Who has a program finale -- what we'd call a series finale in the U.S. -- it should feature three things:

1. The title should be "Last of the Time Lords." It was a mistake for RTD to use that title for 3x13.

2. The Doctor should seemingly die saving the universe from something awful that's also thematically resonant.

3. The last scene should feature the companion(s), talking about the Doctor and how much he meant to them and how much they'll miss him... and then we should see the TARDIS, seemingly destroyed just a while ago, with the door ajar and a hand holding it open. The hand pulls the door shut. The old wheeze begins. Somehow, it's continuing.

Just my thought.

Apart from the Doctor truly dying, how do you ever end a show like Doctor Who?. It would of worked enough due to the ending leaving him alone in the Tardis with all friends gone there seperate ways. However am glad it didn't :techman:

That was the one thing that seemed unrealistic to you? Not the stupid fake regeneration creating a magically convenient sex doll for Rose, not the Daleks having a console in the basement that could blow them up, not the fact their plan made no sense, none of that...but the Tardis towing the Earth home, that was a wee bit daft.

I would hope that TPTB would never feel the need to "end" Doctor Who with a televised finale. That would be a very sad day for me.

Nothing should ever end the Doctor's adventures, particularly some future real-world decision to stop filming the TV programme.

The actor William Shatner ages such that he can no longer believably play the action scenes that we associate with young Kirk, so a decision is made to kill Kirk's character (in a pretty lame way!).

That complication will never put the producers of Doctor Who in a bind. I am sure we'll see a good way around the Doctor's current limit on regenerations and hopefully the Tardis will be carrying the Doctor on his travels for many generations (and regenerations) to come!

Uh no?

Tell me, what looks better? The doctor depressed that he's lost everyone? Or excited that a brand new adventure is coming?

hard to choose isn't it?

Thinking about it, I would pick the Matt Smith one. I only used Journey's End as subject of the thread to see people's reactions to it.

Journey's End is one of the most disappointing episodes of anything I've ever seen. After such a phenomenal build up, RTD did his wanking spastic routine and spunked another finale all over the laminate flooring.

I'd like to have sex with Russell, but only if he promised to piss off once he was done with the amazing foreplay and let me finish myself off. Into one of his socks.

I thought "Journey's End" was pretty awful. I'm glad that wasn't the end of Doctor Who on TV.

In general, I don't like "event shows." If you try to make it the biggest, most epic story every 13 episodes, you're bound to let people down. After a while, the "epic-ness" of a show about a guy traveling around the universe in a little blue box ges a little silly.

They did it right, by accident, with Survival--just a regular episode (with a pretty ironic title), with the narration tacked onto the end to suggest that the adventures are continuing.

well since you put it like that.. I forgot about the cheesy regen scenes. and the Dalek kill box in the basement, with the temp typing of death..

it was a rather bad epi after all..thanks for that Bones, I was quite blinded by Davros envy..

Journey's End is probably the most disappointing of the nu finales. Though it does have three good scenes that save it: Davros taunting the Doctor about turning his companions into psychopaths, the TARDIS towing Earth back to the solar system, and the Doctor and Wilf saying good-bye at the end.
