Jack Horkheimer Star Hustler (June 11, 1938 – August 20, 2010)

Jack Horkenheimer, the 'Star Hustler' died this Friday at the age of 72. He used to do these TV shows that talked about astronomy on PBS stations late nights from the 70's to Aug. 30 - Sept. 5, 2010.

Jack, I have always loved watching the stars with you, and will miss you for your gentle humor, your wit, and your insatiable knowledge of the night sky and all it's wonder. You have been a childhood hero of mine, and I will never forget the Star Hustler.

And remember, Jack, like you always told us, keep looking up.

I can honestly say that he (along with a variety of PBS shows like NOVA) sparked my interest in science. I didn't become an astronomer, but I might not be an electrician if it wasn't for he and other like him.

Thanks for posting this--I used to watch Star Hustler/Star Gazer at signoff years ago. I couldn't see most of this stuff because of the city lights, but it was nice to know it was out there.

I was surprised when I read people reacting to this on-line. I'm from Miami, where he was based, so I'd always assumed the Star Hustler was an entirely local program. I had no idea it aired nationally.

I totally missed this. What a bummer. I assumed a long time ago that the guy was going to live forever. Seems like he's been on my TV talking with alarming enthusiasm about the sky my entire life (I'm 46). The dude was a loon, but a lovable loon. He'll be truly missed.

Wow! I used to watch this guy in the mid and late 80's all the time. I'd stay up late just to catch his 5 minute show. My folks probably thought I was nuts.
Just a couple of weeks ago while watching the meteor shower, I was trying to explain who this guy was to a friend of mine who never heard of him.
He was awesome!
