10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong
by Mitchell Sturges

01) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

I am very much interested in hearing the anti-equal marriage perspective on all of these issues. Your thoughts?

That meme is at least 7 years old now.

And not any less relevant.

I do think, however, it should've been posted in TNZ.

Why bother? We already know who stands where on this in TNZ. I, for one, am not terribly interested in rehashing the gay marriage debate yet again.

The people who are against it got nothin', unless they are against all government involvement in marriage (which some are.) Beyond that, though, what is there? Nothing.

There's an episode of ABC's "Spin City" from 1996, one of the first ten episodes I think, called "The Grand Illusion" wherein the proudly, openly gay Carter outlines his plan to tackle City Hall's stance on gay marriage:

CARTER:
Let me paint you a picture, Mike. First, Nikki and I are going to get married. We will then walk over to the throng of reporters...

MIKE:
Ugh, I hate throngs. Throngs are very uncomfortable.

CARTER:
...and, we're gonna tell them, Mike. That this is a sham marriage. We don't love each other, we're not going to have a life together, we'll never even spend one night in the same room together. We will however, enjoy all the benefits of a legal union: Health insurance, tax deductions, you name it. Then, we're going to trot out gay couple after gay couple. People who've been together, five, ten, even twenty years. They've bought homes, raised children... been an important part of this community and yet none of them can enjoy the same benefits.

That same argument is no less applicable nor any less relevant today.

In my experience, people in this thread won't remain civil...but we can dream...

If the best argument some have for not supporting gay marriage is that marriage shouldn't be a government institution, I hope those same people support annulling existing straight marriages. Equality above all.

Well, what they're really talking about is annulling all of the existing financial/legal benefits currently attendant to marriage. As someone who isn't married and with slim prospects of ever becoming so; suits me. Seems an archaic institution in any case; not something to be encouraged.

I do think, however, it should've been posted in TNZ.

Why? It can be discussed here so long as people are able to remain civil. If you can't do that, Treker, start a similar thread in TNZ.

Oh, I can be civil, I just know this is a "hot topic" with some people and others may not. And if my "tollerance" button gets pressed...

I just wish somebody would press your "spelling and grammar check" button. ;)

It's perfectly okay to discuss this in Misc.

I remember that episode, and even at that time when I was in full Evangelical Fundamentalist Christian mode, I had to admit it made sense (well, on a secular level). Now, of course, I think it's a brilliant, well spoken point.
