True Blood ending after five seasons

Is me or is the third season of True Blood feeling like the middle of a story like the Empire Strikes Back, leaving one or two seasons after it to wrap the show up? How you guys feel about the show ending after five seasons? Because I have the feeling that Alan Ball is a five-season guy and not the one to go for more than that.

Hasn't it already been renewed for two seasons?

HBO will want to milk this show for as long as they can, or for as long as this vampire fad lasts. It's too big of a hit for them to just end it like that.

While the show is very much walking its own path, there is more than enough source material in original novels to go considerably longer than 5 seasons.

Charlaine is already contracted for 13 books. With each season being roughly one book, there is the potential for 13 seasons. So far.

And no, your stupid "what if?" question is vetoed yet again.

So far, I've been very impressed with season three. Each week things get more and more fucked up, more offensive, and more dark. In other words, I love it.

I do know they're planning on adapting book four for season four, so the old tried and true Hollywood rule seems to apply: As long as the show makes more money than it's costing to actually produce the show, HBO will keep making it. I don't know that I believe it will go for thirteen seasons per se (even seven seasons seems a bit much in this day and age) ... but as long as Alan Ball is in charge, I'll keep watching.

I've read an interview with Allan Ball where he said that he wants the show to run as long as possible but he doesn't want to get to the point where he has to explain why vampires age. I'll post the link if I'll find it again ... So it looks like this show isn't ending in the foreseeable future ...
Also, there's nothing to wrap up because every season so far was more or less a self contained story.

I'd say it's conceivable for the show to go on at least another 10 years before the aging of the vampire actors becomes too apparent, although that can be mitigated with CGI technology, there will come a time where the costs outweigh the benefits.

I bet it's way better to be acting on a hit cable show than network, since I'm sure the work schedule is alot shorter out of the year thus meaning they'll have more time to do other gigs if need be and bot stuck playing one character. Almost best of both worlds if you ask me.

The cable actors probably get paid less compared to the big network actors though. Also I know that I'd rather work 9 months a year compared to just 3 months.

Is the third better than the second? Because the second was full of padding.

I watched the second season recently on blu-ray at the rate of a couple of episodes a night and it didn't seem too padded out. Certainly compelled me to keep watching.
Season 3 I've just started, I'm 3 episodes in and trying to take it slow so I don't run out of episodes quick, but it doesn't seem to be a drop in quality so far. But I'm reading the books at the same time and comparing them at the same time, maybe that's keeping me interested.

The Bon Temps Bad Lady story could have been told effectively in two episodes, for instance.

I see what you mean with that but I don't think the thing with Tara and Eggs and really the whole town would have been as effective if they'd have only taken 2 episodes, but yeah it did drag on longer than necessary.
