MLB Talk - 2010 Season

What the heck happened to the Giants. They've been free-falling in Philadelphia and watching the Bullpen implode on itself is disheartening. Hopefully they can turn it around, but with the Padres refusing to lose and the Phillies kicking our ass up and down Citizens Bank Park, My hopes are starting to get dashed. Also, really wondering about the starting pitching. Lincecum is having a terrible year, Sanchez I lost all respect for when he "guaranteed" a sweep ( ) and Cain didn't look all that great. I know there is time left, but they better get things straightened out because I think the season may be decided by Sunday if they continue to lose.

Braves in talks to acquire 1B Derrek Lee from Cubs in exchange for prospects.

Cool. It's nice to see yet another sign that they're serious about winning.

No matter how long I watch baseball, I guess I'll never understand trade deadlines (which I thought had already passed?).

Man, the Detroit manager was pissed last night. He was cursing up a storm at the umpire. I agree with the manager, though, the ump warned Detroit in the first inning but not the Yankees when they did the same thing in the 7th.

This trade passed before the waiver deadline. A team who is looking to trade a player can place him on waivers.

1. The team with the worst record in a league has first shot at this player, and it goes all the way to top, then to the bottom of the of the other league.

2. A team can claim the player off waivers.

3. The team doing the dealing either has to make a trade or pull the player back.

So, it's pretty difficult to make a trade when you've got teams still in the hunt with slightly worse records blocking you.

As an addendum -- if a player clears waivers, he is eligible to be traded to all other teams (no-trade clauses and 10-5 rights notwithstanding), and they can trade freely. However, any player traded for or otherwise acquired after August 31 is ineligible for postseason play.

Another thing is if you make a claim and the other team simply lets you have that player, you get to pay the rest of his entire contract too.

Roger Clemens' lawyer actually said that Clemens proclaiming his innocence knowing the consequences for lying to congress is evidence that he's innocent.

Players actually get three option years. That is, three years in which they are on the 40 man roster, but not on the 25 man roster for some or all of the season.
If a player has fewer than five years of professional experience, he can be sent to the minors in a fourth season without being subject to waivers.
Once the player is out option years, if he gets "optioned" to the minors, he must clear irrevocable waivers. When a player is put on irrevocable waivers, any team can claim him. If no team claims him, the player is assigned to the minor leagues. However, if the player has five years or more of major league service, he can refuse the option to the minors and become a free agent.

Whatever that means... nobody knows how to define a balk, but you know it when you see it. :)

Assuming Clemens did in fact juice up, what would have happened to him if he had come right out and admitted it the first time he was asked?

As I said, I'll never understand it lol. :p

I finally understand waivers after all these years, if someone can explain minor league options, balks, and the infield fly rule to me, I'll be all set!

Infield fly seems straight forward to me. If there is a fly ball in the infield that can easily be caught by a professional baseball player and there is a force out (I believe at second, but it could be at any base) possible with less than two outs, the catch is assumed to be made once the ump determines that it is catchable. The fielder can't simply let the ball bounce, throw to second, and then throw to first to get the double play. Instead, the runner stays on first and the hitter is out.

A bunt is probably considered special in that it isn't assumed to be catchable. They don't tend to pop up as high.

In addition, the runner is usually running on the bunt. It's probably easier to get the double play by catching it than letting it bounce.

Never mind, I found out. They're doing tributes to the Negro Leagues. Pittsburgh Crawfords, New York Cubans.

Edit: After today's game (8/22), Lou Piniella will step down as Cubs manager. Linky

Also, Vin Scully to continue as Dodgers broadcaster.
