Jennifer Lien's cancellation at Parsippany, N.J.

When an actor signs on to be a main cast member in a Trek show, are they also obligated to also make guest appearences at Cons.?
Actually, I don't think so.

No, they are not. That's not part of the contract. That's an added perk that some don't consider a perk at all.

For example, I wish Kate and Jeri did more cons. They both always cite conflicting schedules, but I'm pretty sure it's just because they find them a little on the grueling side.

it's a blessing it's a Trek actor. I think we're a very forgiving and supportive crowd.
I wonder if Will Wheton, Garrett Wang or Robert Beltran feel that support & forgiveness from us?
I've seen posters rip Kirstie Alley a new one just for stating she's not a Trek fan.
Sorry but IMO I think we're only forgiving & supportive of those we favor.

On the whole, we are a forgiving crowd. Pull a con for something a show that is more battle oriented, and I don't think anyone would give her slack at all.

Sci-fi nerds in general seem to be more forgiving. Perfect? No, not by a long shot. But, I've heard actors in sci-fi say time-and-time again how easy the sci-fi crowd is compared to other shows' crowds. It's come up enough that I'm tempted to believe that.

Also, I love Wil Wheaton. As far as I'm concerned, he's the King of Geeks.

I guess I just don't.
If folks are traveling from all around to come and pay to see me. Yeah, I'll tell you whatever you wanna here to pay my expenses.

I suppose, but I think that, as fans, we should probably spread the word on her.

She really hasn't had anything worse than a battle with weight since she left the show. Of course, she has had children, and a lot of women deal with that issue after having children.

I kind of figure that, if you can squash a nasty rumor about a shy person, you should because they're too shy to do it themselves.

Well, that's what I've been trying to do for a couple of years. ;)

To be serious, I agree with what you've written in your post. There has beeen too much crap written about Jennifer ever since she had the bad luck to be fired from Voyager, as the innocent victim of nasty politics. I think we should wish her all the best and be happy that she's living a good life.

I really haven't heard anything about Jenn at all so I was suprised to see her in that fashion... I was a little curious that is the main reason I brought it up.

I can tell you- Robert Beltran has a big forgiving and supportive crowd. I saw him at Fedcon XV in Germany 2006. The fans made him feel very comfortable. He got enthusiastic applause.

I was thinking about these signing events. If I had to go back see a group of people I worked with some time ago, I wonder if I would enjoy it, probably not, especially if I had been let go in that way.

A lot of actors are very shy, its part of their persona, they like to slip into other identities to become more confident.

Jennifer, from the interview quoted, seems to have a lot on her plate, family and studies etc, and then to fit in a signing might be very hard. I noted that she maybe going into studying nursing - I wonder if this came from doing the part of Kes.

I wish her the best what ever she does.

Me neither. The idea seems to imply they owe us the rest of their lives for the chance to be on the show. For many it's just a job - if some decide to do cons and enjoy them afterwards then that's great.

If their contact includes them doing cons., then it's also part of their job as well. That is what I wanted to know. I also ask because all of the main cast of actors do them which makes me wonder for someone as terrified by crowds as Lien is, she got to be doing it for more than caring about the fans. She's terrified by us.

If companies like Creations are paying these actors to appear at their shows, then it's still a job. IMO they're not just doing it for the fans, especially those actors like Ryan & Spiner that have had stalkers.

No, it isn't in their contracts.

Yes, I think it's safe to say we are all aware the actors get paid. Have you seen the cost to get a photo or an autograph at a Creation Con?

But, they don't have to do it.

Ryan, for example, has had a steady stream of work and her restaurant is doing quite well. She's not going for the money.

Some are there for the cash. The bit actors and the ones who haven't really scored anything after Trek.

But, the ones that are doing well (which are normally the main actors), they don't need the CC money. They have stead work, all of them.

I'm sorry but there is no way you can know the expenses these folks have to pay or their cost of living to make such a steatment. Even a successful restaurant can close due to poor money management. So you can't say for certain than they aren't also doing it for money, especially when some like Picardo have addressed it.

Who doesn't need extra money (unless you're Bill Gates)?

I said the main actors have a steady income, not that they're rich.

Wanting extra money but not needing means I'm backpeddling...

Yeah... :shifty:
Steady work for actors doesn't mean they get paid the same rate for every job they do. They have to re-negotiate that with the actors agents everytime they are offered a part.

So for example, while Kate may have gotten paid well on 7 years of Voyager, I'm pretty sure in all the co-starring roles and plays she's done isn't close to what Paramount could afford to offer her. Plus, she hasn't done a starring role in anything major that would earn her what a starring role under Paramount studios could. So yes, after Voyager they all needed CC money to make the same ends meet they did while working for Paramount. That is why many of them got into directing or other lines of business.

That's what I'm trying to explain.
This is why I don't believe the main actors are well to do enough not to need the money.
