I can't see if anything was brought up here about the lack of space between the inner & outer doors. I just got done watching The Daleks, and there was only one set of doors. Absolutely no space between the inside and the outside. Funny thing was, from the inside, when the doors were open, there was the white with roundels appearance on what would be the outside of the doors.
actually the architectural configuration program doing it's job (castrovalva).. I am happy to see the show designers and I had the same idea when it came to the redesigns..very cool to have been shown the new concept art as well..the last design is exactly what I was thinking would be best.. I hope they choose that one
^Well, what I meant was that the exterior of the doors appear to be the roundel design from the interior because that's what their architectural configuration is set to look like, while the Chameleon Circuit is what makes them appear as Police Box doors from anyone viewing them on the outside of the ship...
And the perception filter makes people not look at it when it is a police box. Though the perception filter is a nu-series creation, isn't it?
^^Even in the old series, most folks seemed to pay the Police Box extraordinarily little notice no matter what era or environment it was in. The Perception Filter has been implied for ages. The old writers just didn't have a name to hang on it.
In the time of the old series, if not the time-periods in the old series, there were still some real police boxes around, no?
As I understand it, police boxes ceased to be common by the end of the 1960s, so the Somebody Else's Problem Field -- pardon me, the perception filter -- is definitely implied.
And there still are now. They might not be used in that way and they very rarely look like the TARDIS but there are plenty still around in the UK.
I wonder if the "Moff" will ever tackle the old school Console rooms as a story plot point..?? Also, I wonder how they are going to explain how the tardis interior has now suddenly changed again?? a battle perhaps? maybe they filmed a last scene with the 1st version and will then write how the 2nd comes into being? maybe it gets damaged.. that would be pretty cool to see, since they are changing it. I would hope it just doesn't end up different and we see no explanation, as they did in the classic series, though it would be consistent to do so.
^ Maybe the TARDIS gets a bug up it's butt and starts flipping between "desktop themes". It would have to be done in CGI of course, making multiple physical sets would be costly.
From what I have read, there are still Police Boxes around England and Scotland (Especially a few dozen in Glasglow), but nowhere near as many as in their heyday in the 1950s and early 1960s, as walkie talkies and then mobile phones made them increasingly unnecessary. In the early 1950s, London apparently had almost 700 Police Boxes, but few remain there today. While a few Police Boxes are still used by the Police and some are preserved for architectural significance, some have been converted into kiosks for selling coffee, snacks and such (do a Google Image search!). I hope those remaining continue to be preserved!
I wish they would use something like McCoy's Doctor's Console Room from the TV movie. Man, THAT was traveling in STYLE! It would be a great room to hang out in, explore (as a visitor to the TARDIS), and relax in. The Console Room from the older series was a bit too spartan, white, and almost sterile to me. I would want to spend as little time in that room as possible: Land the ship and get out the door! The current room is a bit too fanciful and quirky for me to be a favorite arrangement. It is a bit zany and interesting, but -I would assume- no fun to hang out in after a while as a traveler. I am excited by the possibility of a new desktop theme. And let's see more of the interior!! Our looks into the TARDIS are a bit like visiting the zoo every week, but never going further in than the Information Center at the Main Entrance!
I think the general idea was that the Tardis was super advanced, which in the late 60's and so on, meant white, clean, and uncluttered which makes sense..when you think about it. It really gives you the impression that the Tardis is an alien ship.. I think that in the new show, series 1, Mickey or was it Rose's mum said she would have thought as an alien ship, it would have been clean and white or something.. okay so let me get this straight.. when referencing classic who they are called seasons 1, 2, etc.. when referencing New-Who, they are called Series 1, 2, etc.. right?
^ Now that I search a bit more on the internet, starsuperion, I think you are indeed correct on this point. However, are people now using what I had understood to be the American convention ("season" in reference to an American TV show vs. "series" with respect to a British television 'programme') for the first 7 Doctors' TV adventures? I do agree with you, that a "clean, white and uncluttered" design has definitely been useful as a visual convention that conveys "futuristic/advanced" and even "alien". I think that is also why Irwin Allen (or at least his show's costumers) tended to have his aliens from the future show up in tin-foil outfits. I guess I'd like to have Doctor Who buck this convention and show that a ship hundreds (or thousands?) of years old that is piloted by an eccentric fellow from an ancient race who is known to wear baggy pants -or a scarf- or even celery!- could have a ship with more of a 'lived-in' look (Man, knowing what stuff my 93 year-old Grandmother has accumulated over her lifetime, I can only imagine what sort of knickknacks and other items that a 900+ year old Time Lord might have collected)(although- granted- he may not be storing them centrally in his control room!....).... ...BUT that is my own inclination. A Time Lord and other races from other worlds may well have a VERY different taste and sensibilities on the subject! Maybe we can be given some more variety in style in other parts of the TARDIS (as we saw in the Cloister Room) IF we could be shown them in upcoming seasons.. er... series, I mean!
