Supes doesn't need a makeover. He needs a filmmaker who is willing to make a movie about who he is: a naive and sincere alien immigrant who fights for Truth, Justice and the American Way.

Filmmakers, if this scares you, stay away. No one wants to see a movie about Genericman.

Maybe they should just wait to see how Marvel handles Captain America and just copy that. My hunch is that Marvel knows how to stay true to a superhero characters' core.

Yeah, they can follow the Marvel plan. Matthew Bomer can play Superman in the movie, he is vocally disapproving of some of the movie's faults, and they recast him with Jim Caviezel for Justice League. :p

There's no real difference between the "traditional" and the Superman Returns version.

Superman is an absolute. An icon. He should never change. That would kill the entire reason for the character to exist.

Remember the last time they tried to give Superman a makeover in the comics? We got this...

The bright red trunks and bright red boots look worse every time I see them. Superman Returns had the right idea there as far as I'm concerned.

I still prefer a bright red flowing cape, though. Guess I'm a little mixed up. :alienblush:

I like the Tim Burton version. Although I'd get rid of the wires around the head; not sure what purpose those serve.

    Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

His costume is fine (though I'd be interested in seeing at least tests for an all-leather variant of the same basic design, like the X-Men movie suits with color), but he really could use a hologram to make his face and voice appear substantially different from Clark's; it's getting harder and harder to buy anyone falling for the glasses trick.

The "glasses trick". No, John Byrne had it right.....as Superman doesn't wear a mask, it would never occur to the general public that he even has a "secret identity". That when he's not around, (when he's Clark), that he's either in some other part of the country or world.

The ONLY part that kicks that in the nuts is the amount of time Superman spends around the Daily Planet crew. If he didn't, if he just moved amongst humans as Clark and never hung out with them as Superman, it'd totally work.

And really, any REAL updating of the Superman mythos must dump the Daily Planet anyway. Newspapers were information hubs in those days, with access to information at a faster rate than the average joe. Thus when a crisis, crime or disaster broke out, he could quickly find out and respond. That was the ENTIRE reason for becoming a newspaper man.

Now, in the 21st century, thanks to the web, we can find out about things just as fast as all the news agencies....and really, who gives a crap about the dying dinosaurs that are newspapers these days anyway? So a modern Superman myth is going to have to figure out a way to work around that element. Superman is supposed to be the "Man of Tomorrow" after all.

As for the pictures of Superman....Alex Ross's Superman hasn't not looked like shit in about a decade. Mainly because with each passing painting, the S gets larger and larger and larger. The S does not cover the bulk of Supermans torso. Ross needs to go back and look the classic Superman comics to see how big the S should generally be.

As for the costume.....really, he's friggin Superman. Every published Super Hero owes his/her existence to him. His costume is THE Super Hero costume. Considering his power, his costume, more than any other heroes (except Captain Marvel) is purely ornamental. When you have that much power you can pretty much wear whatever you want. It's not like anybody's gonna say anything to your face.

I voted no...although I really enjoyed the Wizard Magazine Ultimate DC article from way back in 02 or 03 they did where they updated the costume and essentially carried on the story from Smallville.

I think out of the pictures posted the traditional look is the best anyway. I don't think any change would actually improve it, it would just be change for the sake of change.

    The costume must remain.

As much as I love Reeve, I think the theatrical shorts of the 1940's represent the best screen version. I would love to see the tougher clark and fast paced action scenes of the shorts in the new film.

I'm not sure the Daily Planet has to be ditched, so much as updated. Professional journalists still have some meaning - and there's a lot of story to be had in the idea of the Fourth Estate. Part of the purpose of being a journalist was Clark as a part of the civilian world, that is part of the civic world. Reworking the Daily Planet as a web-based news organization standing as a bastion of journalistic integrity against the FOXNews/ CNN partisan opinion-mongers, harnassing the power of the man on the street reporter that the web has made possible - that's got a lot of appeal. Part of what makes superheroes work is they present a fantasy world where incorruptible people stand up for the regular person in a way that would never happen in the real world. It'd be nice to imagine a media worthy of respect - expecially in this world.

Amen! Superman has never been better than the Fleischer cartoons. That should be a starting point for any new project.
