I graduated high school in 2000, just on the cusp of cellphones starting to infiltrate everywhere. I remember the prefered method of calling my parents to tell them I was ready to be picked up from school if I had to stay late... call collect from the payphone and give my name as "himomitsmecomepickmeupbye". Now kids will never grow up learning to abuse collect calls, a part of our heritage lost forever.

It wasn't quite one of those old bricks, but I remember having 100 minutes and it was like $60 so there wasn't much chit chat.

My Senior year (1999) I did get a pager. It was a really tiny one that just displayed numbers and nothing else (fancier ones could show names and all kinds of stuff). It was $65 for the pager (I bought with my own money), and $8 a month to use it. I had it only for school, and only for emergencies from home.
When I was in school, local phone numbers (i.e land phones) were 5 digits long, then the length was increased to 6 and now they are 8 digits long.
For the longest time pagers were $15ish per mo. And then this one company started charging $25 for the entire year.
I still remember my beeper number.

We should tell kids that at one point this was "state of the art"
And this is about as advanced as my beeper got. And I loved the people that sent every message with a "911" at the end of it!
What do BCE and CE stand for?
I've never come across them before. Or if I had I glossed over it and hadn't realised they replaced BC and AD.

I found mine after some searching, it was the Motorola T10, and it was one way numeric only.
I loved that little pager.
You know, I think they still sell these!
I had the same experience in school. Computer lab was awesome! I loved reading all of the dirty headstones that kids created in Oregon Trail.
Storybook Weaver and Math Blaster were cool as well.I remember when my best friend in middle school first got a computer and the internet. I didn't think it was that interesting until we went online and she searched for Titanic, and I saw the entire movie script online!! I was blown away by all of the information we could find about the movie. My friend actually printed out the whole script and her dad was PISSED because it was quite an extreme number of pages...
By the way, I still use a pager and a card catalog every day at my job!

I believe she is a Librarian.

Librarians can use pagers for everything. That said, most libraries use pagers for customers when an internet terminal is available.
Okay, now I'm even more confused. What's Common Era mean? What's so common about the last two thousand years, as opposed to the years before that.
I know it's just another way of saying "everything since 0" but it seems an odd phrase. We should just use a number line and everything before 0 is a negative number.
