Christopher Nolan will give Brandon Routh a screentest

According to The Movie Blog Superman producer Christopher Nolan will give Brandon Routh a screentest. Routh played the titular character in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns.

Nolan has acknowledged that Routh certainly looks the part, and will offer him a screentest. In discussing the prospect of casting him, he is worried about the general audience thinking the reboot has anything to with Superman Returns. There will be a difference in how they approach the characterization as well. Singer for example, kept Clark Kent similar to the Donner interpretation. Nolan wants to try something different and offer Clark up as the new “talent” and will be more competition than an undercover hero. That is right Byrnes fans, gone is the bumbling Mr. Kent.

I like how they are going for a different Clark Kent and not the bumbling buffoon of the Donner/Singer iteration. That makes me confident that this version of Superman will be decidedly different than what we've seen before.

The fact that some of you believe that article is true is beyond me. Look at the writing, it's obviously fan boy bs. As much as I would love for Routh to return.

I really hope that Routh gets the role if this article is indeed true...as I've said before I had no problem with his performance as Clark Kent/Superman I only wish that he had more to do as Superman with more dialogue. I've been long excited about this Superman project, I'm eager for more news and a casting announcement in the coming weeks.

I agree with this. If the article is indeed true, I'd bet Nolan is offering him a screen test merely out of courtesy and a future defence to the fanboys. "Well, we did test him...we just felt he wasn't right for the direction we were going."

But I implore Nolan...seriously consider him. He's great, and could do it differently, and if he's right for the role, don't worry about stupid audiences confusing timelines and shit. They'll get it and they'll go.

Seems to have the skill to do it, if given some better material. Was perfectly fine on Chuck, for example.

On the other hand, inviting him in to screen test for Superman is probably just as insulting as leaving him out, if not more so. If he got left out, could at least rationalize it as him having been in the last one, this is a reimaging, etc.

Inviting him in, OTOH, is basically like interviewing someone for their own job, and then telling them they aren't qualified...

I think it's a stretch to call the script "terrible". What it sets out to do (be a poetic and magical Superman movie) it does really well.

Unfortunately that's just NOT the kind of Superman movie most fans wanted to see.

Asking him to submit to a screen test would be the slap in the face, according to Hollywood etiquette. Screen tests are what unknowns submit to in order to win a role. An actor who has already played a character would, quite reasonably, submit the initial film as his "screen test." If the producers dislike how he played the role, they would never consider offering him the role again, unless there were powerful marketing forces compelling them to do so. And that's not the case here.

They may want to see how Brandon handles this "New Superman" since it will be different from the one he played. His test may include notes and stuff from the script for the Nolan/Goyer movie.

Routh is a terrible actor. Nolan should choose John Hamm, if age doesn't matter, and if he does need a young'un, Matthew Bomer would be the acceptable second choice.

That depends on which version you go with. The Clark Kent who came to Earth as infant, was raised as a human and only developed powers gradually is no more "alien" than the Flash. ( at least in his head) Both his public personas, Superman and the public Clark, are disguises to some extent. The real Clark is the guy at home with his parents or alone in his apartment. ( or with Lois in later stories).

The Clark Kent, who as Kal-el, came to Earth as a toddler with a full range of powers, memories of Krypton and has had to hide who he is since childhood probably thinks of himself as alien.

I'd love for it to happen but I think the general 'need' to keep away from any link to Superman Returns will prevent it.

Batman Begins and Superman Returns both made $200 million, but only Batman got a sequel. If Superman Returns' budget had been kept around Batman Begins' budget we would have already gotten another more action packed Singer directed Superman movie by now.
