Should the classic black and white who shows be released in colour on DVD and Blue ray?

I actually love the black and white serials, however, in wondering what would the classic series had looked like in colour, I stumbled across these examples, and I must say, now that I have seen these in colour, I am on a definite yes.. :techman:

sorry guys..but they just rock!

a story on the colourisation process at the BBC

No. Except for that episode of Mind of Evil. Besides, it would be very expensive with current technology to colourise them all. I think animating missing episodes from incomplete serials should be a higher priority.

Mind Of Evil was in color originally and I think they're workling to get it back to color. But personally I'd leave the pre-color stories alone.

A big "no" from me. I love old b&w shows, DW and others, and I've no wish to seem them colourised.

I wouldn't mind seeing the old B&W serials colorized. As long as the original B&W version is also available on the disc.

No.
Except... if it could be used for a plot point.
eg: The Mind Robber, the real people are coloured, the fiction is still B&W.
and, if it existed, The Celestrial Toymaker - make the distinction between the real people and the Toys.

In both cases, though, I'd be tempted to do it the other way and have the Doctor and co in black and white (that's their reality, for these six seasons) and the non-real people in colour - perhaps exagerrated colour. In the case of Toymaker, if you animated the first three episodes, really presenting them as animated characters.

Whilst I would like to see the results of it being colourised, I love B+W shows and it is an important part of movie/tv history so I will have to give this one a no.

Ah, I see once again I am against prevailing opinion. I'd like to see them coloured. It's not like the original B&W will be lost in the process. And it might temp new viewers in, younger folks who might be put off by the black and white of the original.

NO!

That will take away not only the charm of the originals but also the scary and other worldly aspect. The more colour you, the less your imagination works, especially when they colourise things in this case.

If they colourise it it swont have the same effect, to me anyway.

So similar to the way Tim Burton does his movies. The present (or rather real life) is all dark and dismal where as the scary afterlife/alt dimension/ scary fream type state is all colourful and vibrant and fun and happy.

I love the way he turns it on its head and in the case of Who, doing it in a way to distinguish different places/people and ind control and mystical places/people would work, but i still think it will not have the same impact as the imagination wont have many gaps to fill.

I also have to say no because I love black and white. Besides, there are better ways to spend money on Doctor Who such as animating the missing episodes.

Yes, assuming it was done well and you were offered a choice to view the original.

Now that is an aspect I was thinking about as well, Brilliant Assessment! I mean as a doctor who fan, it is important to get new fans into the genre, because new fans equal a continuation of the show and merchandise..

so to colourise the original shows and make them available really breathes new life into the classics for those who are interested in going back and checking out the past..historical TV precedent is still kept, it is not like no one knows most shows started out black and white, and those black and white shows are still available..but I think that it does well to at least give the consumer the option to purchase the classics in their original format and in colour..

why not do both?

Actually, you know what? Those who are interested in going back and checking out the past can actually go back and check out the past. It's quite easy. All those black and white DVDs are out there. That's the past, warts and all.

Now if we're talking about those who would be interested in going back and checking out the past if only the past looked a little bit more like the present, it's a different game. Why stop at colorizing the old stuff? Why not add CGI, modern music and sound effects and edit the old stories in a contemporary 45-minute format while we're at it?

Because it would be silly. If you're interested in modern television shows, watch modern television shows. If you want to know what television series used to look like, watch the old stuff. But trying to change the old stuff so that it's more acceptable to modern sensibilities is a colossal waste of time and energy.

Anyone that shallow frankly doesn't deserve to watch the show. Full stop. When they mature and grow up they'll understand and enjoy black and white for what it is. Until then, screw 'em.

I wouldn't mind the colorized versions. But, I don't have a problem with the B&W originals at all.

Mr Awe

What an odd thread - why would you colour something that looks fantastic in black and white!

Couldn't have put it better myself! Leave Who in B&W, it's how it was made it's how it should be enjoyed (especially since you would be actually altering the original since much of the set wasn't coloured, it was shades of grey!
