Rank the NuWho seasons

As for the 2008-2010 specials:

1. "Planet of the Dead." I'm sure this is a shocking, unpopular choice. Truth be told, it's not a great story. It certainly doesn't seem special enough to be a special. But it's a solid story with an interesting premise, a couple of good guest starts, and a remarkably restrained performance from David Tennant. Plus, it has the funniest line in Doctor Who history when the authorities try to arrest the Doctor. "Right. I'm just going to go lock myself in this police box.":guffaw:

2. "The Next Doctor." The beginning is great, particularly when the Doctor thinks that he really is talking to an amnesiac future version of himself. But when the giant Cyberman robot starts stomping all over Victorian London like a rogue Zord from Power Rangers, they lost me.

3. "Waters of Mars." Really creepy monsters. A great, under-realized premise of the Doctor going kinda evil. But ultimately, this special is sunk by too much David Tennant overacting, particularly at the end. Which brings us to...

4. "The End of Time." Ye gods, this is bad! It's 2 hours of David Tennant & John Simm trying to out overact each other! Bringing the Time Lords back was cool but pointless. I did like the real meaning of the "He will knock 4 times" prophecy. But then the victory lap where he revisits all of his companions (1) strained my credulity to the breaking point and (2) felt a little gratuitous since we'd already had a big multi-companion get-together in "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End." (Plus, after the way things ended with Jack in Torchwood: Children of Earth, bringing Jack back for a funny little Doctor Who cameo just felt totally tone deaf. I've got tons of issues with Jack after that and it'll take a carefully crafted Torchwood return before I'll be able to stand the sight of his face again.)

Overall, I'd rank the specials below any of the modern seasons.

1. Waters of Mars. The only one I didn't particularly have a problem with.
2. Planet of the Dead. Way too much downtime chatting with the bus people, but aside from that pretty good.
3. End of Time. Extremely disappointing. Extremely anti-climactic. Terribly brief return of the Time Lords accomplishing absolutely nothing. The Master becomes a psycho skeleton hopping around. Too much, man. The ending is just way too sappy and manipulative.
4. Next Doctor. Aside from the Cyber King being neat, this just felt like one colossal waste of time, particularly the "next Doctor".

I can only be certain about the positions of 5 and 2, but at the moment I think...

After re-watching the first two seasons of new Doctor Who on DVD, it struck me just how similar it is to TNG, in terms quality. While there's a lot of crap episodes (early on and then intermittenly after that), there's also The Empty Child, Father's Day, The Girl in the Fireplace, etc. too. Arguably classic episodes of any science fiction show ever. I almost want to look at it by a case by case basis and not judge them by the season. Having said that... Five is the best. ;) Even the cheesy ones still had great dialogue and character work.

don't really care about Amy; in fact, I think I like Rory better (probably completely alone on that one  )
No, it's a fairly common opinion.

Hell, I quite like Amy, but I like Rory better, too.

I also like Rory more than Amy. But I will say that I like Amy better than Rose or Martha.

That's about my ranking as well, with S3 and S2 switched around.

Same here.

I don't really get why others dislike him. He has that reserved English everyman element in an almost Arthur Dent kind of way, and he gives an enourmous amount of depth to Amy's character.

They work much better as a couple, imo, and it's an elegant solution to the problem of having a sexy young assistant who either does or doesn't have a puppy eyed longing for the doctor. This way, you get your cake and eat it too - you get a romantic coupling aboard the TARDIS for all the fans who want that kind of thing, and you still keep the doctor as just a good friend... Brilliant!

Agreed, on both counts. Though I think both characters are stronger together than they are apart. Having the Doctor traveling with a couple (a genuine couple) is a welcome change of pace, at least for someone like me who's only seen nuWho. Did any of the Classic Doctors have companions who were in a relationship with one another?

I think I'd have to go for

11/Amy
10/Donna
9/Rose
10/Martha
10/Rose.

I put it that way because while the episodes vary, it's the interaction of the Doctor and companion that has a big effect across the season.

I agree that Amy/Rory adds a new dimension to Dr Who. I don't think he's travelled with a couple before.

I agree with your assessments by companion/Doctor relationships, diankra. That's the order I'd put the relationships in, too.

Nine/Rose was good. Ten/Rose was nauseating for me, for the most part. The Doc/companion bond is important. 11/Amy and 10/Donna are great.

I think series 5 is the best so far, but I like all the rest the same. I mean, 3's got John Simm. He's why I love The End of Time so much.

Also, the Waters of Mars rocks.

4 (I love Donna, she's probably my favourite character in the series)

1 (Eccleston was awesome and it was my first Doctor Who experience)

3 (not a big fan of Martha, but there were some great episodes)

5 (Matt Smith is great, but Amy was pretty dull and most episodes were kinda blah)

2 (this series would rank higher than the fifth if Rose wasn't so annoying, no idea what happened, I liked her in series 1)

Specials (I liked The Waters of Mars, everything alse was not that great, Tennant's neverending death scene in The End of Time was the worst, I literally screamed "Die already!" at the screen, the only thing I liked was when he met Rose, but it would have been more meaningful if she hadn't appeared in series 4)

Good way of looking at things, I'd probably swap 10/Donna with 11/Amy but you're spot on re Rose!

Yeah you have to give Moffat props for having plenty of romance without it dominating in the way it once did--I much prefer Amy/Rory to Rose/Doctor, it feels more real, as does the old married couple banter of 11/River

I was going to offer some accompanying commentary but thought better of it.

I wouldn't have shared that opinion about Rory until The Big Bang. He seemed boringly average at first, and I questioned why Amy would want to settle down with him. And then she finds out waht he was doing while she was asleep for two thousand years... suddenly it like "wow *she's* lucky to be with *him.*"
