Jeff Goldblum leaves L&O: Criminal Intent; show's future questionable

According to Variety, Goldblum has decided to bail from Criminal Intent, which may or may not get a pickup for a tenth season.

Goldblum's reps told Variety on Tuesday that the thesp has made up his mind to depart, and say it's not a negotiating tactic.

There's always the possibility that Goldblum can reverse course, but for now the actor said that his decision is final.
Goldblum's decision to leave comes after two years on the USA drama. Goldblum's option with the show and Wolf Films had expired, and his reps said the actor chose to exit "due to the uncertainty" surrounding the show's future.

Parting is said to be amicable – Goldblum enjoyed his time with USA and Dick Wolf's Wolf Films, but ultimately decided to move on.
The show, like its Law & Order siblings, is highly expensive to produce due to shooting extensively on-location, already suffered a significant budget cut when it was shifted to USA several years ago, and has been in steep ratings decline for quite some time (falling from 8.38 million viewers in its final NBC season to 7.46 million in its first USA season to 3.05 million in this most recent season).

I wouldn't be surprised if his departure will kill the show, at this point.

^ The Good Wife. And movies.

Benjamin Bratt's last few shows have gotten the early ax. Is there a storyline reason to bring him back to NYC with a promotion?

Would Anthony Anderson or Jeremy Sisto cost too much?

I know. I was just kidding. Maybe they could bring back George Dzundza's character.

Yeah, because it can take a guy twenty years to get over bein' killed by a shot to the back of the head.

While I've seen many of the first season episodes, I've never seen the one that showed what happened to Greevey.

Honestly, the show to me has been on life support since Goren and Eames left the show. They were the heart and soul of the show from the beginning. Nichols and his partner try to do the best they can to fill in Goren and Eames' shoes but they were only able to fill in a few inches. It's better to let the show die in peace.

When all else fails...Bruce Boxleitner!

Maybe they can move Munch over and give Belzer something to do for a change.

Time to Old Yeller it. This last season was ok but it's just not as interesting as it used to be. Too many cast changes in a short period of time. Once you start warming up to a character they leave.

Time to put this horse out to pasture. Goren and Eames were the center of the show, so without them, there's just not a reason to tune in any more.

How about bringing Jamie Bamber over from L&O: UK? :)

The one L&O that should have stayed on was the first to be canceled. SVU will be ending very soon and CI is dead. LA I won't be watching so L&O as a franchise is in serious trouble.

L&O: Trial by Jury? That was the first one to be cancelled, followed by Conviction the following season. That makes the flagship the third one to be cancelled. Fourth if you count the Crime & Punishment documentary/reality spinoff.

I wasn't aware the fate of the franchise depended so heavily on your personal viewing choices. ;)

The original mothership was in the best shape. The stars, with the possible except of Sam Waterston, was up and coming and cheap. I was particularly impressed by Linus Roache as Mike Cutter. Their work in recent seasons had been getting better.

SVU, in my opinion, has become tired and paint by numbers to be entertaining. It seems like each episode tries to top the previous ones in the severity of the crime. In addition, Meloni and Hargitay are commanding big bucks and it seems like they have to keep trotting out big names, Hilary Duff as any example.

I never watched CI, but it seems like cast is leaving like rats on a sinking ship.

Hmm, making space for a 21st season of the original perhaps?
