Best and worst parts of season 7

Lower decks is a moving, excellent episode. One of my favourites from all the Star Trek series. The season is overally just average for me, with a very few good episodes raising it to the level. But things like Masks, Sub Rosa (a space soap opera) or Force of Nature are like, ewww ... the lowest point for me was Force of Nature, not for the episode in itself but because it risked to establish a dangerous canon: that warp propulsion was polluting and dangerous. Luckily the writers found a way to elegantly skip this problem just having us guess Starfleet found a way to correct the problem. Bah.

See I never liked Lower Decks.

The Sito story was alright, especially her relationship with Worf.

But the rest of it was dreadful.

I liked Dan Gauthier in Tour of Duty, but not in this episode.

Firstborn had potential, but then there's this time travel reveal that makes the whole thing wrong. "ADMIRAL JANEWAY SHOWED ME HOW TO TIME TRAVEL, FATHER. Oops, said too much."

I'm pretty sure you're joking. Forgive me, but I do have a serious question about this. I recently watched this episode and I didn't catch how future-Alexander said he travelled back in time when Worf asked him. What did he really say?

Masks of Course! Great episode. Pegasus, Parallels, All Good Things, Preemptive Strike, Lower Decks... A few others...its not mediocre, just not as good as the previous 4 seasons.

The family theme was the best part of season 7. The younger characters - Ro and Wesley - even leave, and go on their own way. It builds up to All Good Things... which was a respectful and appropriate way to end the series.

There was a definite drop-off in quality in s7. I'll go against the grain and say that I like Sub Rosa for its entertainment value--like Spock's Brain, if you watch it as a parody of Trek instead of serious Trek, it's pretty amusing. I liked Liaisons for the scenes where the alien guy was busting Worf's stones. When I re-watch it, I just FF through Picard down on the planet and focus on the on-ship comedy--I'm sensing a trend here.

Gambit was a workable pastiche of a standard space adventure--not entirely plausible but good fun. There were a few other legitimately good episodes (Firstborn, Parallels, Lower Decks, Preemptive Strike) some dreadful ones (most of which are amply named above), and a lot of blah ones.

I actually really liked "Dark Page" (along with the other usual suspects, Pegasus, Lower Decks, AGT etc). I thought it was interesting how they gave a depth to Lwaxanna. She was so "bullish" on the outside, but deep down she was hurting so badly over the death of her child. I think I cried watching this, and that isn't something that Trek does to me easily.

How did future-Alexander say he travelled back in time? Anyone?

He travelled back with the assistance of a man from the Cambra system.



In All Good Things... Q explains to Picard that humankind's real journey is the exploration of the unknown possibilities of existence. This should be the inspiration for a new Star Trek series. A series which would be a true successor to TNG and DS9.

I don't think season 7 would be any fan's favorite, so it basically then becomes a debate of whether the good outweighs the bad. I think we have a bell curve situation with TNG and its opening and closing seasons. I find that the first and seventh carried the highest number of mediocre episodes while the internal seasons 2-6 each featured a greater number of good to great installments.

I haven't revisited much of season 7 in awhile, outside of AGT, although I did watch "Attached" a few months ago and really enjoyed the character interplay most. I think that's what carried all of us through that final season, was the great affection we had for the characters and the cast's familiarity and comfortability with each other. Other than AGT, I remember enjoying "Thine Own Self", "Lower Decks", "Genesis", "Preemptive Strike" and "Gambit", while also having a soft spot for the Data-centric "Masks". It was interesting, though, how during that season, following TNG my local affiliate would run DS9 and I would be amazed at what stellar episodes they were producing on that show in its sophomore season.
