Captain Janeway,
I wish to submit the following proposition for consideration in the Holdeck Program Design Contest:
The Voyager Olympics
The Voyager Olympics will be a fun filled and educational program designed to boost crew morale through the excitement of athletic competition. Moreover, the program can be used for several other beneficial purposes, as outlined below.
The physical parameters of my program will include two distinct climate zones in order to accommodate both summer and winter outdoor sports. The winter zone will be similar in climate and appearance to Switzerland on Earth, and the summer zone will be modeled on a more temperate climate, such as the American Midwest. (Ensigns Vorik and Wildman will be assisting me in programming a holographic atmosphere that will eliminate the danger of thunderstorms and/or tornadoes forming between the two zones.)
Each zone will feature a number of indoor and outdoor venues where a wide variety of sporting events will be held. I plan facilities for:
Ambu-jitsu
Archery
Bat'leth Competitions
Boxing
Fencing
Golf
Gymnastics (including zero-grav tumbling)
Hoverball
Ice Skating (speed and figure)
Kayaking
Parrises Squares
Ping Pong
Springball
Skiing (downhill and cross-country)
Sailing (hyrdosailing and traditional)
Swimming (various events)
Tennis
Track & Field (various events)
Tsunkatse
Velocity
Other events can be added upon popular demand.
Prizes are TBD pending a discussion with Lt. Torres and Ensign Kim regarding energy consumption. Ideally, medals will be replicated for the winners of each event. However, if such an expenditure of energy is deemed unwise, I am confident that our crew's love of friendly competition will ensure that "bragging rights" will be a sufficient and highly sought-after award.
As you know, the joy of victory and the agony of defeat are only part of what makes the Olympics a special event. I am sure you will agree that the spirit of camaraderie that arises from friendly and honorable competition among athletes from diverse cultures is truly a key part of the Olympic Spirit. In order to foster this sense of brother-sister-and-other-hood, my program will include an Olympic Village Plaza, adjacent to the beach on the "Summer Side". An open air plaza will be surrounded by kiosks featuring food and fun from each of the unique cultures represented within our Voyager family. Crewmembers can stop by the Bajoran kiosk to sample some spicy hasperat, while away a peaceful hour listening to the music of Delvok at the Vulcan kiosk, or engage in many other fun activities while exploring the diversity of our galaxy.
On the "Winter Side", you will find a ski lodge with a Great Hall suitable for large gatherings. A dance floor will be flanked on one side by a piano and lounge area, and on the other by a bar & grill. Irish Coffee is a specialty of the house! Along one entire wall of the Great Hall, a massive fireplace will be surrounded by comfortable couches and armchairs suited for relaxation and good conversation.
After the official competitions are over, my program will continue to benefit our crew. The athletic facilities can be used for general recreation. Many of them, particularly the martial arts suite, will be invaluable for physical training and drill. And of course, social functions can be held in the ski lodge. Imagine the happy crew spending Ancestor's Eve enjoying dancing and champagne in the Great Hall. Besides its festive ambiance, this facility has another important advantage - it can accommodate the entire crew at once. No longer will we have to pack ourselves into the Mess Hall like Bolian Sardines, or attend the annual Prixin party in shifts.
I am extremely enthusiastic about this opportunity to use my holo-programming skills for the benefit of the entire crew. Thank you for taking the time to consider my proposal.
Sincerely,
Lt. G-----, Security Division
