Unwelcome phone calls

Why is this even a problem? Doesn't everybody have caller ID nowdays? When telemarketers, or whoever they are, call me, If I don't recognize the number, I don't answer.

That's what I do; NO-ONE who's not already in my phone with name and address and picture and whatnot gets through to me!

I quite often have to take calls from people behind switchboards, so they tend to appear as "Unknown". Bit annoying.

Now, that's an app I need to get, thanks Holdfast -I didn't even know this kind of software existed!

I just looked on my phone; the software I found is called Call Firewall.

The only reason I don't want to ignore it completely is in the case that there is some legitimate debt that I owe. If so, I want to get it sorted out before it damages my credit score.

I never answer calls from strange phone numbers, and I always wait for them to leave a voicemail. If they don't, it's clearly not important. What REALLY bothers me about this particular caller is that the same guy tracked down my parents' AND grandma's phone numbers and called them trying to get my personal information. This is not just some random telemarketer. This guy is clearly looking for ME.

But he also called at 8am on a fucking Saturday. I'm sorry. I don't give a shit who you are. I'm not answering my phone that early on the weekend.

What they did was very, very, VERY common, and illegal. And I can tell ya' (having filed a number of complaints aganst jack-hole collectors that think I'm the guy they're looking for and then not getting the ideal I'm not) they don't care. They'll pay the fine or file brankruptcy and open a new company move on with their life.

Some of these guys are no better than knee-breakers working a shakedown.

I should, and as far as I know, I do. That doesn't mean I shouldn't make sure. If I do have some lingering debt out there for some reason, I want to get it taken care of before it gets me in deeper trouble.

Forgive me, but shouldn't you already know what debts you have?
Yes, but that doesn't stop someone from claiming you didn't pay some fee or you missed a payment and year later they come after you even after the rest is paid off. Or for that matter, you can pay a bill off and it still end up in collections over a clerical error.

All I know is that I want to buy a house sometime in the next year, so the last thing I need is a bad mark on my credit report.

I'm sorry your family is also being harrassed, but they should do the same if they can.
Where have you been? Telemarketers and debt collectors don't let you get their phone numbers. They show as "restricted."

Yes, and when I see "Restricted", I do not answer. Another one is "Unavailable". When you see these, don't pick up the phone.

Is this concept really that hard to understand??

Plug the number into this site. There's a greater than zero chance you'll be able to identify it.

Also look up your state's Fair Debt Collection policies, contacting your family may fall outside the purview of the policies.

If it's in the hands of a collections agency and they are specifically looking for you, your score is already hit. They don't mess around.

You're an accounting major, so you should be somewhat familiar with the field -- right now, and I mean right now, get a credit report. Either do the "freecreditreport.com" stuff (and immediately cancel your Triple Advantage membership upon receiving the report), or just take the method of getting your credit scores every four months, once from each bureau. (You are entitled, by law, to one free credit report from all three bureaus per year.)

Normally, I'd take the latter route, but if you've got an agency on your ass and you don't know why, the $30 it takes to run all three through a reporting site is a worthwhile expenditure. Find out what the hell is going on.

Otherwise, keep in mind that the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is federal law, and don't hesitate to remind the callers of this.

TGSith, did that collector really swear at you like that over the phone? :wtf:
Yes. I've been sworn at, told to sell drugs, told to prostitute my wife, one threaten to have my mother arrested to make me pay, recently I was told my wife should get an abortion so i could send the money to the bill, and my favorite: one made threats of physical violence-- breaking my arms if I didn't pay.

And yes complaints have been filed and the process is ongoing as to what can be done, will be done, and if it will be settled of followed through.

Just read this site all to common horror stories

Example:
The first payment was taken but the second payment was never taken from my account. HBPL was able to sue me because I missed a payment. I didn't miss a payment. They did not process my payment that was scheduled, confirmed, and documented by my debt settlement company.

My bank account was then garnished without just warning. The entire amount was taken. This caused many checks/ purchases to bounce. The original amount for my credit card was $1200. I have now paid double and don't know when this will stop. I don't know what to do. My bank account was recently seized again.
And this
They called my mothers house for 2 months asking for me and then in may, 2010 said that if they I didn't contact them within two hours the sherriff was going to come and arrest me at my job.

Know your rights, and exercise them without hesitation. Despite what they want you to think, you've got more options than they do.

(within a few months all those telemarketers and politicians and recorded ads will stop when they can't get a real human on the line....)
Well, some will stop. Most will not. I still ignore them.

Exactly. And whoever said we've been trained to  whenever the phone rings is spot on. I can't seem to get my family to accept it though - sometimes I'm just NOT in the mood to deal with the phone. But if I don't answer, they think I'm bleeding in a ditch somewhere.

Yes l hate that too.
This woman who was asian kept ringing me saying l had won a holiday l said that l knew it was a joke and hung up the phone
Soon after a man who was asian rang me saying the same thing.
i told him it was a con and that he should hang very quickly and for sure he did.
There is alot of con artists out there and if you are easily conned they will get you

That's a fun thought, and had I learned anything practical during my accounting studies, I might have actually enjoyed it. Unfortunately, in my entire time as an accounting major, all I really learned about was how Enron was evil.

Every phone call I get is unwelcome.

How'd you know they were Asian?

They probably had an Indian accent.

Not to derail the thread too much, but do you (or anyone else) have good sources on what your credit score means, exactly? I've looked around online but found very different things about similar numbers.

Apparently the company is Hunter Warfield, and they are a legit collecting agency, but they have a list of complaints against them about a mile long.

If I have a debt that I owe, fine (I have no idea what it might be, but whatever), but they have absolutely business calling my family. What the hell are they doing calling my grandmother?!

Unfortunately they can find any phone numbers legally through searching (skip tracing) with your social security number or on the original application you signed.

Now let me address these complaints on here. Many times as a collector I was accused of doing something that was not true. That's because most people if not all hated to be called by a collection agency and start off the conversation with a bad attitude. You would be surprised how many debtors will make up horrifying stories then you find out later it wasn't true. Many of the people who complain on here have only themselves to blame for not taking care of the bill when they should have.

I am not saying there are not CA's out there who don't deserve to be shut down, it's just the majority of them are not in that category.

You are going by what you're family is telling you. Most often than not it is the family members screaming and yelling at the collector because they won't divulge any information about the call. They (collector) are right in doing so because the CA doesn't want to break the law.

You weren't present when they called your family members were you? Of course not, so you're going by what they tell you. It's a common theme among debtors family members who hate to be called about you and then not be given detailed information as to why.

When you call the CA have them remove all family members and friends from their list and ONLY call your own phone numbers such as your cell and home. This way you avoid arguing with the collection agency for no reason.
