I just got carded at Walmart...

I got used to having my bag searched in stores when I lived in Belfast during the late eighties. Then they searched you going in, and they weren't looking for merchandise...
I got pretty used to the same treatment during the three years I lived in Israel. They weren't looking for shoplifted goods either.

I guess I must look like an adult now. I bought some compressed air from Fry's yesterday, and I didn't get carded. I stopped by on my way home from work, so I was dressed up. That may have had something to do with it. (That, and the fact that I bought the smallest can there instead of the multi-pack.)

I know they were not looking to see if you have stolen a tape but I wonder how much the rates of shoplifting have gone up since they stopped that.

I once got carded at the grocery store for buying beef jerky. No joke, I couldn't make up anything that originally stupid if you paid me. Another reason to avoid those stupid auto checkout lanes. You get carded for meat products and it eliminates the "faster" aspect.

How are you carded if it's an auto checkout? Auto checkout is automated, right?

Auto checkouts are still manned by a cashier. A cashier will manage, on average, four auto checkouts at a time. They're there, essentially, to give change should the machine run out, to respond to assistance requests, and to override the machines if they wait on a cashier for a response, such as a customer purchasing restricted material, a cashier would still have to approve the sale for the system to continue.

What if a 18 year old tries to buy beer on the auto check out. It would alert a staff....:vulcan:

They automatically alert staff members whenever alcohol, tobacco, or other controlled products are scanned and will not allow the transaction to continue until the staff member instructs it to.

I once got asked for ID while buying a movie, rated 12A, similar to PG-13. Now, I'm fairly big for my age, that is, 16, so I was just in shock for a second. Apparently the store has a policy on any age-restricted items needing ID if you look under 18. The only form of ID I have is my passport, and I don't take that with me if I'm out shopping for a 12A movie.
The store didn't have that policy the last time I went in there, so it just seemed stupid to me.
Anyway, I just went out, walked down the road to another shop and bought the movie without any problems. It was a bit cheaper as well.

Obviously, I've never tried to buy alcohol. I did once try to buy Red Bull, which has a limit of 16, my age. I got stopped from buying it in a different branch of the same store, although that one was understandable, as I could have been 15. Again, I had bought it in another store fine.

I really need to get another form of ID. A passport's just not practical to take around.

I was waiting in line at KFC the other day and the guy infront of me turned around and asked me if I were under 18.

Not really sure why the hell being over or under 18 would matter at a KFC but it was quite satisfying that I can still pass for under 18.

Since, AFAIK, fried chicken is not an age-restricted product, maybe he wanted to ask you for a date.

Huh. I didn't know that about Red Bull in the UK and I've always assumed the drinking age for alcohol was the same as in Germany, i.e. 16 (for beer, wine and the like).
Nevertheless, I managed to buy alcohol when I was only 15. At the time, you were never asked for ID unless you looked really young. I'm not sure how it's now (probably the same).
When I was 14 I went to a disco in England and another patron at the bar asked me incredulously why I didn't order something alcoholic. Everyone else was drunk, so at the time, it wasn't enforced in England, either, it seems.

Well, there was a lot of controversy about it in several European countries when it was first introduced, due to the high content of Taurin. It's still banned in France, I think, and maybe in a few other countries.
Apparently, in the UK it has an age limit.

Yeh, when I went to Germany, it was no problem at all to buy it.

I tried to buy it back in England. Turns out you have to be 16. Well, I am 16, but I had no ID on me. (try carrying your passport around in your wallet)

^I don't have a passport. Should probably get one...although my Enhanced Drivers License should serve me well for now.

The only form of ID I ever had on me until I got my Learner's Permit was my school ID, and even then, I rarely had it on me. I almost never carried a wallet until I started driving-I never really had any money on me, what little I did have I would be fine stuffing in a pocket. Anything that I purchased requiring ID,my parents were usually around to purchase.

The first time I was carded for anything was earlier this year when I purchased some airgun pellets at Walmart. It made sense...ammo is probably something they want to kep somewhat regulated. Yet, when I bought the rifle I was purchasing the pellets for earlier that year, they did not ask for any form of ID.

There's no legal age limit so far as I know - but some places enforce 16 because it makes children even more horrible.

If it makes you feel any better, I've been carded not once, but TWICE for a lottery ticket. A LOTTERY TICKET! :wtf: This guy didn't even think I was eighteen years old and I'm now 29! It was basically an insult to my intelligence but Mom says to be glad about it because when you reach 40, no one will card you for shit anymore.

Been carded a few times in the rare event that I go gambling (slots, craps before it got to $5 a roll, making $20 go reeel fast)
