I remember Crimson Tide getting attention. I dunno. I know Viggo Mortensen plays a pussy in it, making harded to accept him in later heroic roles.
Some quirky bits to it. Lippizaner Stallions = racial tension! A fight over the Silver Surfer!
What the fuck was that shit about?
That, my friend, is the awesomeness.
The Lipizzaner stallions bit is inspired metaphor, and the Silver Surfer stuff is just so out of nowhere it's great:
"You have to set an example even in the face of stupidity. Everybody who reads comic books knows that the Kirby Silver Surfer is the only true Silver Surfer. Now am I right or wrong?"
Actually the movie is chock-full of great lines:
"Horses are fascinating animals. Dumb as fenceposts but very intuitive. In that way they're not too different from high school girls: they may not have a brain in their head but they do know all the boys want to fuck 'em."
The whole von Clausewitz sequence is pretty cool for an action flick too.
But the best bit scene is where Hunter and Ramsay are each quoting competing navy regulations over the top of each other and the Chief has to decide who is correct. I love that he stays true to the regs and doesn't let him liking of Ramsay stop him from detaining him. But after:
"Thank you? *Fuck* you! Get it straight Mr Hunter, I'm not on your side. Now you could be wrong! But wrong or right, the Captain can't just replace you at will. That was completely improper! And that's why I did what I did. By the book."
The orchestral music in this film is brilliant too.
Random trivia -- They wanted Al Pacino and Brad Pitt for Crimson Tide.
Glad they didn't get them. It may have worked too, but I love the film we actually got. Hackman always brings something cool to a role, especially.
