Your Favorite TV Show That Was Cancelled

Blake's Seven (totally kickass finale though)
I never think of Blakes 7 when these threads appear, either. It's still my favourite ever TV SF series and I'd love to have seen where it would have gone next, but "Blake" is so brilliant a finale I don't feel ripped off or anything. Besides, it had four seasons; I tend to be more annoyed when shows with loads of potential are canned before they get to realise it. Like Now and Again. :scream:

Enterprise: Just as it was getting good, nay, fantastic. The 4th season is the only one I've bothered to pick up on DVD.

Firefly
Sarah Connor

Another vote for The Oblongs. While it certainly couldn't have sustained Simpsons like longevity, another 2 or so 13 ep seasons would have been great. Same for Mission Hill. Love having these two series on DVD.

Battlestar Galactica: I realize it had run out of steam with the current creative team, but there were just so many facets of that universe left unexplored. I hope the new spinoff SyFy wants can tap into that.

Oddly enough, I'm frequently reminded of B7. My current fridge makes a sound when it turns on identical to the sound on B7 immediately before Zen says "Information..."

:vulcan:

And there's another one I forgot!

I kinda felt they were spinning their wheels by the time it was cancelled, so I don't really miss it.

But I'd like to have another Western on TV - not a huge fan of the genre, but one would be nice - preferably with a sf/f twist, like that rumored Supernatural spinoff that seems to be dead.
I just finished the first season of Carnivale, and am liking it so far. It's a tad slow, but I like the characters and the season finale was great. Can't wait to see the rest. Is there some closure at the endk or is it just left up in the air?

Waaaay the heck up in the air. But watch S2 anyway, it's more coherent than S1 and there's never been a show before or since quite like it. (And then watch Heroes S4, where they do an utterly pathetic attempt to rip it off. :rommie:)

8. Life on Mars (US version)

This.

I thought I was the only one on this board who liked that show! (I've never seen the UK version, nor do I particularly care to)

To my mind, Harvey Keitel is Gene Hunt, and I will accept no substitutes. Also I absolutely loved the period specific New York City setting. And Jason O'Mara was really cool as Sam Tyler. Plus the supporting cast were all excellent as well.

True, the final scene really bit the big one, but they can always The Good That Men Do-ize it out of existence just like with TATV. ;) Plus I don't think the finale was "real" anyway. Look at the decorations on the wall of the lunar module, plus whose boot it was seen stepping onto the Martian surface... ;)

Nope. You were not the only one who liked it! I liked it a lot! :)

I agree with you about the ending - it was pretty lame. But hey...it wasn't like they had alot of time or existing storyline to work with when they were forced into writing an ending. So I don't hold that against them at all. And I really enjoyed the rest of the show.

Further, I agree with you about Harvey Keitel - he was perfect. And I really enjoyed Jason O'Mara and Michael Imperioli as well. Really, I liked the whole cast - there wasn't a one of them who annoyed me.

Finally, I think that this show had one of the best openings of any show that TV season. To this day, when I think of that show, the first moment that comes to mind is the moment he looks up in 1974 and sees the WTC looming overhead. That scene just sent chills down my spine.

5. Dirty Sexy Money - the only non-scifi-ish show on the list. Scifi shows, I'm never really shocked about when they are canceled because they appeal to a niche audience to begin with. But I will never understand why this show did not take off. Brilliant and extremely talented cast, and one of the most bizarre and hilarious storylines ever!

I don't know if it ever "took off" (I never saw the show) but I do know that it was cancelled mainly because it was a super-expensive show to produce.

Well, I hadn't heard this...but it does make perfect sense. So thanks for posting it. :)

The cast itself on that show had to command some big bucks - Donald Sutherland, Jill Clayburgh, Peter Krause, William Baldwin, Lucy Liu, Blair Underwood... Had to be super-expensive. Plus, the sets had to be extremely expensive also, since they had to portray a massive spectacle of over-the-top wealth and privilege. The Darlings (the family portrayed on the show) never did anything 'small', so they had to have yachts, helicopters, luxurious apartments, over-the-top parties, limos, etc used in pretty much every shot. Shoot...even the wardrobe had to be expensive.

Really? Great! I knew there was a reason I liked you, PK. ;)

I just wish we would have found out who that weird voice on the telephone was. That must have been a major plot point that they couldn't follow through because of the abrupt cancellation.

I did hear a theory that it was Chris, although I don't know why they would do that...

I also love that bit about the second time traveller (i.e. the city councilman who gets caught in a shootout at the precinct and then, as he's dying, tells Sam he's also from the future)...

And Sam going undercover as a swinging airline pilot and calling himself "Tom Cruise"... :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw:

Sam's hippie chick neighbor was pretty cute. Interesting who she turns out to be...

See, you really hit on something that was the chief frustration for me, in terms of this cancellation. That whole story with his mother & father...and that story with the city councilman...they really left open some doors for great future stories...and those are the things that made me feel like the cancellation was shutting some doors on a show with real potential.

They set up some mysteries there...and those mysteries are another reason why I do not think the show would have ended with a reboot, but more something along the line of a conspiracy...or someone out to change the timeline for a very real reason, or something like that. They just did not have time to develop whatever it was they were going to do there...and so had to go with an ending that made sense with what little storyline they had already.

That is what puts this show on the list for me - the unrealized potential it had. Same reason I put shows like Firefly, Wonderfalls, and Dirty Sexy Money on my list. All of them had something going on in them before cancellation that could have been REALLY interesting if it had been given time to play out.

And by the way, I saw the first 2 episodes of the British version of Life on Mars, and I am someone who usually enjoys British TV shows. And it did not grab me in those first two episodes the way the American version did. Have no idea why, because a lot of people like it. Maybe I should have watched more...but after the first two episodes, I just wasn't inclined.

Space: Above and Beyond. I thought it was great at the time it came out but being on Fox naturally it got axed pretty quickly. They rescheduled it, moved it to pre-emptive time slots then called it a failure. Much like what was later done to Firefly (and countless other series in that vein along the way). Competition had little to do with it's demise.

Dead Like Me is another I wanted to see go on but the network president at the time hated it (or so the rumor goes) and axed it. Something I hear is quite common in the business with the so-called premium networks especially.

Firefly of course. What more needs to be said?

Earth2 I thought could've gone somewhere but again was given the short end of the sci-fi stick.

Odyssey 5 was another show that got canned because of a network president disliking it. Manny Coto was the man behind it and it seemed like he had grand plans for it.

The Dresden Files is another (yes, I've read every single book bar the latest until it's in paperback so I know it's a more "inspired" take) and once more, cancelled before the first season even had a chance. In fact this television series is what got me to read the books (which true to form, are better than the filmed adaptation like virtually everything else).

There are a lot of series I'd love to see given a second (and in some cases, first) chance but all of them are well past the point.

The Chronicle on Sci-Fi. I thought that show had a cute premise and a lot of potential, snuffed out too soon.

You know, SyFy should think about remaking The Chronicle. It would fit in nicely with their current line-up of light-hearted sf shows like WAREHOUSE 13 and EUREKA.
