The X-Files Rewatch Thread

Where am I? Racing through these because I'm enjoying them so much...

1x10 Fallen Angel

Great episode, one of the mytharc episodes from the first season. More alien encounters, government cover ups, and Deep Throat. Seems like every government agent but Mulder and Scully know about aliens. Scott Bellis is great as Max Fenig. Can't believe Scully fell for the "downed Libyan plane with nuclear device" crap. Also, this movie slightly reminded me of 2012 with the crazy guy in the trailer, and also of Dude Where's My Car where two people meet for the first time in cages out in the middle of nowhere. Random, I know.

1x11 Eve

One of the best episodes of the first season. Eugenics, creepy twins, and bloodletting. What more could you ask for. When I think back on all the episodes I've seen, this is one of the first ones that come to mind, and I always think about the scenes in the mental hospital/prison. Great script and great direction.

1x12 Fire

My first time seeing this episode. It is downright terrible. Never really understood the motivation of this pyro. He's murdering Parliament members so he can be with their wives? :wtf: Just weak.

Gonna wrap up Season One for those of you still playing the home game.

1x13 Beyond the Sea - I like this episode. Scully starts doubting herself, really declares her emotional attachment to Mulder, and start I couldn't help but be reminded of her freaking out on the priest in I Want to Believe. She's been very emotional towards psychics since the beginning.

1x14 Gender Bender - terrible episode, except for the ending. Kind of liked the twist that these were aliens. Still not sure what the point of the episode or the motivations of these guys were. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

1x15 Lazarus - pretty good episode. Nothing really memorable, but still nice to get tidbits of Scully's past.

1x16 Young at Heart - another decent episode with some Mulder background.

1x17 EBE - one of my favorite first season episodes. I love the Lone Gunmen, Deep Throat, and the chase of the truck with the alien.

1x18 Miracle Man
1x19 Shapes
1x20 Darkness Falls - all mediocre episodes not really worth rewatching anytime soon.

1x21 Tooms - Tooms is still creepy. Glad Mulder finally got to toss him into an escalator!

1x22 Born Again - a reincarnation episode I felt really missed the mark

1x23 Roland - this is another mediocre for me

1x24 The Erlenmeyer Flask - another thrilling episode. This show is really at it's best when it's about an alien conspiracy / government cover up.

The Best of Season One: Conduit, Ice, Eve, The Erlenmeyer Flask, EBE, Squeeze
The Worst: Space, Fire, Gender Bender, Shadows, Born Again

No, not really. This could have been a really creepy bug swarm, paranoia, claustrophobia filled episode, but it just didn't work for me. I did think the giant cocoon was cool though.

I like how close Mulder and Scully come to their death in that episode. It's nice to have them be in actual peril once and a while.

I also like the northwest setting, which takes full advantage of filming in Vancouver rather than trying to hide the fact that they film in Vancouver.

I also did like the scene where Scully freaks out near the end. I think the lack of interesting supporting characters made me not really care about this.

2x01 Little Green Men

Mulder opening up this season with a voice over is very effective. Mulder is absolutely frustrated at this point. He has no evidence to provide, his only insider contact is dead, and he's stuck listening to idiot goons talk about strippers named Tuesday. However, Mulder still holds some high government contacts, so he's not totally hopeless.

We have the first inconsistencies regarding Samantha's abduction here. Mulder's dream/memory differs from his hypnosis tape in 'Conduit'. Morgan & Wong said they didn't watch Conduit. There was only 24 episodes of stuff to go through... kind of lazy, but whatever. I'm sure there are a million 'canon' reasons to rectify the fact that Mulder remembers laying in bed, but now he's playing Stratego.

And Mulder comes away with absolutely no evidence again? Wow... he's got the worst of luck. Great episode though.

*chirp chirp*

2x02 The Host - as dumb as a giant mutated parasitic worm sounds, this is actually a pretty good standalone. Don't go in the Port-a-potty!

2x03 Blood - a little implausible (more than aliens?) but pretty good as well. The only thing that gone on my nerves was the repeated sound effect when a message to kill would come through an electronic device

2x04 Sleepness - Still don't like this one. The opening scene is good, but the rest is just cheesy.

2x05 Duane Barry / 2x06 Ascension - the best episodes up to this point. It just seems like they put a lot more effort into anything involving aliens or abductions. Really great acting and pacing... would turn anyone into an X-Files fan.

2x07 3 - this might be my least favorite episode up to this point. They needed another episode to account for Anderson's pregnancy, and it shows. Just not my thing. (Twilight doesn't help).

2x08 One Breath - everything from Mulder crying, his confrontation with CSM, and Scully's visions are great. This episode is quite different from most, and it's great.

I love the eight episode arc that opens up season two. Sometimes the show would strike a jarring tone going from monster of the week stories to mytharc stories week to week, but here the two are perfectly integrated.

Well, except for 3, which can be eliminated from the order pretty easily.

2x09 Firewalker - boring, boring, boring

2x10 Red Museum - weird episode. It's a mythology one, but not until the last five minutes or so. I'm still not sure how I feel about this one after a couple of viewings. Not really very good.

2x11 Excelsis Dei - yay Teryl Rothery and the last act of this episode, otherwise - not very good at all. The pacing is way too slow.

I'm already mentally making a list of stuff to watch during my next run through of episodes ten years from now, and there are a lot that won't make the cut. This show has some serious highs, but when it's low it's barrel scraping.

I've always loved this episode for the sheer, unadulterated yearning displayed by both Mulder and Scully.

That, and because it always makes me want to watch Little Green Men (DS9).

2x12 Aubrey - nothing amazing, but it's not a bad episode either. The idea behind it is a good one at least.

2x13 Irresistable - the first time I've seen this one, and I love it. It could easily be a Criminal Minds episode, but it's an excellent case in the hands of Scully and Mulder. Probably the best standalone up to this point. It's villain is almost as creepy as Tooms.

2x14 Die Hand Die Verletzt - Not really sure what was going on with this one... I think it's a little too complicated for its own good.

Yeah, it seem shocking at the time, but in later seasons they are on their damned death beds every fourth episode.

A very uneven series, it had some shittastic episodes from season 1 to the end (arguably THE TRUTH is actually excrement).

And the Samantha clone confusion starts. Two very good episodes though.

2x18 Fearful Symmetry Odd episode. Couldn't have been better, but I wasn't really disappointed in it. This was my first time watching this one as well.

2x19 Dod Kalm [A-] This is one of the better episodes of the season. Pretty cool setting.

2x20 Humbug [A] This is one of my favorite standalones. This is the first purely comedic episode, and it's great.

2x21 The Calusari [C] TXF just not do paranormal/possession episodes very well in my opinion.

2x22 F. Emasculata [A] Great episodes. Overall, the later standalones of the season are much better than those in the beginning. And, we got to CSM again thankfully. His appearance can make any episode worthwhile.

The List and The Walk are the two worst standalones yet. Chris Carter's directorial debut and John Shiban's writing debut for the show respectively.

Wow. You're at almost the exact same spot as me now. :D Last I checked, you were at the end of season 2, and I was about to watch "Nisei". I only watch like two or three episodes a week and skip ones I don't like, but I still thought it would take you awhile to reach mid season 3 and by then I'd be onto season 4. With your marathon watching, we're now in the same area of re-watching. Neato.

Isn't that 'train two parter' awesome? I love how badass Steven McHattie was...when you see only his hand against the glass as he kicks the hell out of Muldur - it was almost like an evil version of the hand visual from "Titanic". Next up for me - "Pusher", featuring my favourite 'two-shot villain' next to Eugene Victor Toombs.

Just to share some of my thoughts on season 2 - I think it would have been better for Alex Krychek to be Mulder's temporary partner for several episodes before he revealed himself as a mole. If he had been introduced in Little Green Men, then we could have seen him slowly reveal his true motifs up until the Duane Barry/Ascension storyline. It just felt a bit rushed having him introduced in Sleepless and then betray Mulder in the next episode. Also, the episode 3 was a waste of time into a topic best left for shows that focus more on science-fantasy than science-fiction.
