Talk Me Into Watching Community

I tried this show for the first four or so episodes, but it just didn't grab me: I didn't like the overdone smarmy protagonist, I didn't like the cookie-cutter love interest, Chevy Chase seemed to be phoning it in (which you'd think would be hard for Chevy Chase at this point). The Spanish teacher was the only amusing bit.

But in numerous NBC Thursday Night threads, a number of posters here have said it's decent - better than the Office now, and much better than Parks and Recreation (which I actually prefer to the entire Thursday night line-up, excepting only the magnificent 30 Rock).

So ... what am I missing? Did the show start getting good after the fourth episode? Was I just not getting it?

I watched Community as it aired, and the first few episodes, and especially the pilot were weak. I almost gave up on it myself. But around the time of the Debate episode(1x09 I think) and the fantastic Halloween episode it really hit its stride and just continued to improve.

Watch Modern Warfare, the Halloween episode or the Christmas episode, and if you don't enjoy any of them then Community is probably not for you.

Another "Convince Me" thread... JOY...

Community is a show that does a lot of things well, especially in terms of arc-based characterization and development.

It's grown into a real gem and is currently Must-See-TV in my book.

It's one of those shows you have to pay attention to. You can't just have it on "in the background".
