Babylon 5 is better than Hitler

Evidently, it's better than Doctor Who as well:

As I mentioned in my last entry, I've been watching Babylon 5 lately. It's not a perfect show, but it has one big advantage: it's consistent and believable.

Contrast this with Doctor Who...

Doctor Who has the advantage of having characters I care about.

Babylon 5 is not better than Hitler. There are few things more entertaining than an irate Hitler.

Advantage to B5 for motivating me to watch the whole thing, despite the rough first season and JMS' pretentious tendencies. Saw about three episodes of Doctor Who (Eccelston brand) before deciding it was just too unfocused and derivative of other things I've long since grown bored with. I suppose it's a good show if you're a kid or nostalgic for things you saw when you were a kid. B5 works even if you have no particular affection for it, and in fact kind of intuit that JMS is a big, fat, unappealing jerk. :rommie: It is definitely work that stands on its own merits. It has to.

Anyway, none of this has much to do with the actual article, which is funny:

seriously, between calling the strongman "Man of Steel" and the Frenchman "de Gaulle", whoever came up with the names for this thing ought to be shot
People are worse idiots in real life than in fiction. :rommie:

I met JMS. One of the nicest sci-fi/fantasy writers I've ever met. He treated everyone with respect and had a self-deprecating sense of humor.

I wouldn't even mind the lack of originality if they weren't so heavy-handed about it. Apparently we're supposed to believe that in the middle of the war the Germans attacked their allies the Russians, starting an unwinnable conflict on two fronts, just to show how sneaky and untrustworthy they could be? And that they diverted all their resources to use in making ever bigger and scarier death camps, even in the middle of a huge war? Real people just aren't that evil. And that's not even counting the part where as soon as the plot requires it, they instantly forget about all the racism nonsense and become best buddies with the definitely non-Aryan Japanese.

To those of you who have not yet followed Mal's link... seriously, go follow it.

I think I'm more or less with Temis on this one, though I view Babylon 5 a trifle more charitably then that. For the show's flaws; I was interested enough to finish it. Doctor Who has never been that appealing to me in any incarnation.

I think the worst offender here is the History Channel and all their programs on the so-called "World War II".

This was really a lot better as a movie, Triumph of the Will. Turning it into a TV series that endlessly recycles stock footage wasn't a good call (and they never resolved the Finnish arc to my satisfaction.)

If we can't agree that both Babylon 5 and Doctor Who are better than Hitler, there's probably little chance that this group will ever agree on anything.

:guffaw:
That article is awesome! And I loved the first comment: "Truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense." Perfect!

Really? I felt the movie was rushed and that the TV show was better paced to give proper development for the millions of characters involved, you can't manage that in a 90 minute movie. The show wasn't perfect, and they fell back on the old trope of senselessly killing off millions of characters for shock value, but it was enjoyable fluff.

At least we can all agree that it was much, much better than the spin-off: The Cold War. That show went on for far too long, and there wasn't enough action.

I don't know if B5 is better than Hitler. Stalin definitely. Idi Amin without question. But Hitler... hmmm. Tough call. Certainly not better than Hitler on ice.

I love Doctor Who, but B5 blows it out of the water really. Weird to even compare them though.

I'd rather watch the worst Doctor Who serial for eternity than sit through a minute of B5 again.
