Any movies worth seeing in the theater.

Being a child of the 80's, I thought the A-Team was great. It was maybe a wee bit long, but I still liked it. Bringing this up has me wondering...

Were Benedict and Schultz actually in the movie or just in the after the credits bit?

Note that me + 80's show is not always great. The Dukes of Hazzard movie years back was terrible. Actually terrible doesn't describe how terrible it was.

Yeah, so terrible they even made a prequel, although using a teen movie format complete with nudity which was so far off-character for Dukes of Hazzard. Ugh.

I haven't been to a movie since Avatar (before they jacked up the price). When they jacked up the prices to at least 20 USD for 3D, I decided to sit this summer out and not see anything, 3D or 2D. I have a nice home theater system and will rent or buy the Blu Ray when they come out. Patience = lots of money saved.

Thanks for all the reviews.

Inception and Tron are the only Hollwood flicks I'm interested in this year. Tintin too, but I'm not sure if that's this year or not.

I was like you. I watched "Inglourious Basterds" in August 2009 and then didn't go to the movies for almost a year because every movie I was remotely interested in got reviews that scared me away. Then I saw "Toy Story 3" twice (once with a friend, once with family). The second time I saw it, I saw it in 3D. That was the first movie I ever saw in 3D and I was not impressed. Yeah, sometimes it's cool when it feels like things are coming right at you, but it's not worth the extra money, the inconvenience of having to wear the glasses, and the minor headache it caused.

I'm glad I waited so long to go the movies again. "Toy Story 3" wasn't perfect, but it was worth the ten month wait. I'm hoping I won't have to wait very long to go to the movies again with "Inception" coming out, since that movie looks like a sure thing. After "Clerks II", "Superman Returns", "X-Men: The Last Stand", "Spider-Man 3", and "Beowulf" in 2006 and 2007, I vowed to myself that I would never again go to a movie unless I was really, really interested in it and the buzz was really strong. It sucks not going as often as I used to, but my decision has paid off well. I never want to leave a movie theatre as disappointed as I was by those movies ever again and I think if I keep being as cautious as I've been, the plan will keep working.

Yeah, seems like you're a lot like me. A movie has to interest me a lot for me to go see it. A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to go see Kick-Ass with him, but I passed on it because the trailers just didn't do anything for me. Basically, anything that gets a feeling of mediocrity from me will get a pass.

Sometimes movies that I've wanted to see but didn't get the chance to the first time around, I get to see at the cheaper theatre when they're on their way out. There's more value that way as I get to go more often. On the other hand, there's something to be said about not going to the movies often, and it's the appreciation of the experience. You tend to appreciate it a lot more the more you've been away from it.

I have no idea, but my guess is that it wasn't planned to be in 3-D, especially considering how long movies like that can take to make. I have a feeling it was tacked on at the end. However, I have no proof of this.

You're not missing much -- I saw it in 3D on opening weekend, and 2D yesterday. Couldn't really tell the difference, other than having to wear the goofy glasses.

Still, an awesome movie. Damn Pixar made my eyes tear up by the end... In a very good way. ;) :)

Cheers,

Another vote for Inception. Planning on seeing it when it opens here next week.
Guess I'll check out inception. And I wouldn't mind seeing a little more Summer Glau. Any rumors on another Fire Fly flick?

I forgot, I did see Avatar and The Lovely Bones.

3D does not work for me..as a child I had a form of lazy eye that required corrective lenses for 7 years leaving me with a VERY dominant right eye. The early 80s (Spacehunter) polarized 3D period left me with huge headaches. When I tried Avatar in 3d, I left the theater sick.

I'll wait until real 3D holographic movies are released..not this eye fooling BS we have today..

That reminds me, I've been meaning to ask, does 3D give anyone else headaches? I went into my first 3D movie terrified of getting a headache (3D hater Roger Ebert got me paranoid with all his columns denouncing the format) and I think I came out of it with only a *small* headache. Now I'm wondering if it was partially or completely psychological and I just psyched myself out. Can anyone (without some prior medical or psychological condition influencing them) confirm getting a headache as a purely physical reaction to 3D?

If so, the recent proliferation of 3D is definitely something that I think could scare people away from going to theatres as much as they used to. I was dismayed when watching "Toy Story 3" to see so many trailers advertising movies in 3D. It's like how now all movies come out on DVD *and* Blu Ray and I can't help but wonder if we're slowly moving towards everything being only on Blu Ray (just like how everything used to come on VHS and DVD, then VHS was phased out). If we get to a point where every movie (animation and live action) is in 3D, I may have to stop going to the movies altogether. :(

I have heard people say 3D gives them a headache its not you.

the problem with 3D is that its only ever depth behind the screen, not out of the screen like you want it to be, and when the only 3D seems to be the lead character being "infront" of everything else, its not all that impressive.

I didn't get a headache, but when I saw Avatar in 3D, I was bleary-eyed and I did feel slight strain. You're supposed to feel comfortable wearing the glasses, but since vision is different for everybody, it's such a gamble. Personally, I think that's why 3D will never catch on, because the effect and its success is much more a personal thing than other technological improvements in cinema such as technicolour, widescreen, and HD. It's totally dependent on the viewer. And I can't imagine watching in 3D all the time with a 3D TV will be great for you due to the way it forces your eyes to something that isn't natural.

I might be wrong, but I think people who have the most trouble with 3D are people wearing prescription glasses. We've been prescribed for a reason, to correct vision problems, and 3D presents an extra element of stress for the eye, hence the strain.

To the OP:
It really boils down to personal taste.
Since you haven't been then I'm going to say no movie is worth it for you to this point.

If trailers can't get you in or media reviews then at this point some subjective internet opinions shouldn't be weighted any heavier. You either know what you like or you don't.

Seems you don't like what has been put out to date and people saying go see Inception, when it hasn't been released is kinda hollow.

For what its worth 3-D isn't for every film, it was the one big aspect of seeing Last Airbender I didn't like. I could've done something else with that $4 upgrade.

The people talking about 3D giving people headaches... that's what causes headaches.

So far, Avatar is the only movie I've seen in 3D lately. I didn't get a headache from that.

I've been avoiding most of the 3D movies out there, opting for the 2D versions instead (particularly since the discount theater only does 2D films). I figured it was worth it for Avatar since it was shot in 3D and always intended to be 3D. I don't like it when films are upconverted to a format they weren't designed to be in. And then they add new little shots for the 3D crowd that look pretty stupid. It's being used too much as a gimmick rather than the way Avatar did it; making the alien world feel like a more tangible, immersive, real place.

As for the quality of current movies themselves, I haven't seen much this summer that has impressed me.
Clash of the Titans & Prince of Persia were lame.
The Ghost Writer was an interesting thriller with a pointless ending.
Iron Man 2 was OK. Robert Downey Jr. is always entertaining but the villains were pretty lame.
Despicable Me was very sweet and a lot of fun. It's my favorite movie of the year so far, but there's nothing in particular that would justify seeing it in the theaters now as opposed to renting it later.
Predators was very dark & very exciting with some interesting twists at the end. I suppose if any of these movies are worth seeing in the theater, this is the one. I find that dark horror movies tend to be more effective on a large screen in a dark theater, preferably at a late night showing with low attendance.

I'll probably see Inception tonight. We'll see...

I have only seen Iron Man2 and The A Team and I have to recomend A team. I do want to see Inception though. Not to say IM2 was bat, I just thought A team was better.

In terms of recent releases, I enjoyed The Karate Kid, The A-Team and Toy Story 3. I'm looking forward to Inception and The Expendables next, but it really depends on what types of movies you like.
