World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

What a shitty final that was. The dutch were kicking everything and the Spaniards were bitching about every little thing.

Horrendous end to otherwise a decent world cup.

Here I was hoping that they could hold out for the penalty kicks too. I figure that would have made up for the otherwise crappy game.

Well, that ends my interest in soccer for the next four years, back to the game we really care about here, rugby. The All Blacks completely pasted South Africa on Saturday, hopefully they'll repeat that effort this weekend!

Great result - nice to see Spain getting a result their potential has promised since...forever, really.

What I saw of the game was...err...less than stellar. World Cup final or not, how booting someone in the chest doesn't get a red card is beyond comprehension. Some of the other crap was almost as bad. Not a great advertisement for football.

Oh, well. Four years until the next circus. At least they don't have vuvuzelas in Brazil. :bolian:

Congratulations to the real winners (yueah yeah Spain yeah yeah, awful game):

Forlan - class act
Mueller (though settling ties for the Boot with number of assists is bloody pathetic - just share it like they used to)
New Zealand - the only unbeaten team in the tournament!

Seriously that final was dreadful. Webb got it totally wrong in terms of controlling the thugs and divers on the pitch. De Jong walking for that impalement would have set the bar.

I loved this World Cup though. Better overall than 2006 and 2002, but not 1998 (the only 4 I've seen). 2006 had more classic matches, however.

Yet.
Silence, you. Let's not give anyone any ideas. :p

Just to add to the stupidity of this, apparently Iniesta was booked for taking his shirt off after he scored the winning goal. Yes, it's a bookable offence (incredibly enough), but really - how are those two things even remotely comparable? Football has a remarkable knack for making itself look utterly stupid at times.

Terrible game, from both teams, really. The Dutch were clumsy oafs and the Spanish a bunch of actors. And Webb... Ugh, the least said about that idiot the better.

Neither Spain nor the Netherlands deserved to win the Cup the way they 'played'.

Every 4 years my interest in football is piqued, I watched the england games and I watched this final, but that was all. This final reminded me why I spend the other 3 years 11 months avoiding football. It's a game full of cheats and thugs.

I'm no fan of Webb, but I sympathise with him in this case. The game was borderline anarchy. How do you referee when one team is throwing itself over at the slightest touch and basically playing a non-contact game, and the other is playing an over-exuberant contact game? He could certainly have done better as I said above, but this was not one of his worst games.

The hypocrisy of the British press today is hilarious. They're all fawning over pretty Spain and condemning the thuggish Netherlands. In a month's time, they'll be lauding the likes of Blackburn and Stoke for playing the same type of game as Holland against one of the big guns (probably Arsenal). Hilarious, and pathetic.

Your viewing strategy is wrong. Finals usually aren't great games and England played really mediocre this year. Next time, try watching the game for third place instead, it's usually more entertaining. :)

All in all, the refereeing in this World Cup was awful. Sure, there are always bad calls in any tournament but I felt that it was way out of proportion this time. I have no idea why that was, even otherwise good refs like Stark and Webb blundered.
The final was a disgrace. Not because it wasn't a great game - as I said that's usually the case - but because it was so brutal. And I have to blame most of the brutality on the Netherlands. They should have lost van Bommel and definetely de Jong in the first hald already. Maybe that would have set them straight. I was actually in favour of the Netherlands before the final but after the game I thought that none of the two teams behaved like champions that day, though Spain was the better team.
I must admit that I forget details very quickly and I saw much more games than of any other World Cup previously but a lot of games weren't very good. Nevertheless, my interest in football has been reignited.

On a related note:
The best player of the tournament is:

Diego Forlan

That was unexpected, but I guess after todays martial arts exhibition, FIFA decided to give neither team any more titles.
The best player of the tournament award is decided before the final.

Which led to the somewhat hilarious choice of Zidane in 2006.

I think this final set back football's cause in North America by several years. It was everything Americans complain about: diving, boring, hack and slash buffoonery. That being said, since all World Cups are now decided by who can dive better, the Netherlands strategy of actually hitting the other team before the other team can fall down pretending to be hit seems like a reasonable policy. If only de Jong had a chance to hit Ronaldo ...
