George Takei for City Council

Phil Yu of blog.angryasianman.com found this kick-ass campaign poster of George Takei in 1973. We've always known that Takei embarked on a career in politics and community service, but who knew he looked so dashing while doing it? I would've voted for him.

I remember going through LA in the 70's and hearing him interviewed on some local issue of the day. He was articulate and seemed well-informed. I don't see why he wouldn't have done a good job.

That was the campaign that screwed up the airdates for TAS in the LA area; his opponents claimed that his voice on a cartoon would constitute an unfair amount of airtime and threatened to demand equal time if any episodes featuring Sulu aired during the campaign.

Only in politics does any of that make sense.

BTW, a little humorous story about that campaign: One day when George was out walking the streets, shaking hands, and drumming up votes, John and Bjo Trimble accompanied him, along with other volunteers. John and Bjo also brought along their daughter Lora, age nine at the time. The main objective of the day was to hand out flyers (presumably the one pictured in the link above). And ever so often, Lora would dash off, then come back and put some coins in George's pocket. Eventually, they asked her just what it was she was doing. Turns out she was selling the flyers to passersby (they had his picture on it, so that makes it a collectible, and the campaign needed money, so what the heck?) and managed to raise $2.19 for the campaign.

He told me at a convention breakfast years ago that the local Los Angeles TV stations couldn't broadcast the live-action episodes with him in them because it was believed it would give him an unfair advantage.

George is still active in community service. Not long ago, he and long-time partner were married soon after it was legalized. George still does Public Service Announcements, as well.
Although some here have ridiculed him for it, I was glad to see him doing commercials again. He was a good friend at a time I needed one. I will always love him for that.
